They didn’t fuck up, it’s just the most visually pleasing imagery. It might not make sense in reality, but it looks great.
Would have looked just as great if they had switched the position of the sabers…and it would have made logical sense.
In 10 years time Lucas will visit Disneyland and will go to the editing room and after some changes we will learn that actually Vader swung first and it was Luke who stopped him from beheading Palpitine b/c Luke knew Vader must not kill Palpatibe out of anger and rage but out of love. He then puts on an elaborate show and even lets himself get electrocuted so that Vaders actions come from a desire to save his son, not kill the man who killed his wife.
Of course Disney will make a boatload on T shirts that say “Luke Swung First.”
The original theatrical cut of Star Wars from 1977 will be rereleased in theatres globally on 19th of February 2027.
I’ll look forward to actually watching this version again. Haven’t seen it since the 90’s. I own a version of it on dvd. But my disc players have never been able to properly play it.
We don’t talk about that version. It’s controversial cause it’s not the actual original version and is infact the laser disc version which is an entirely different negative that has a plethora of issues
Why make that announcement when that’s so long from now?
The one that doesn’t say “Episode 4”?
Presumably, I don’t trust the announcement for what it’s worth only given they pulled this stunt back in the 2000’s for the home media release with Lucas Films giving an half assed response about how using the original negatives isn’t possible and that they had to use Laser Disc Transfers which while technically yes are the closest thing to the originals. They aren’t 1-1.
A good video on this subject explains it better than I can. But because of this release it prompted the beloved fan restorations.
I still have the original VHS copies but that definitely is the 1981 version of New Hope. Empire and Jedi are what was in the theaters originally though.
Issue is Lucasfilms when releasing the special editions they essentially took the original versions and written over them with all the SE changes.
Lucas Films went on and disclosed this back in 2006 with the Laserdisc Transfer that was used on the DVD. They stated how the original versions are essentially not in good condition resulting in them using a 1993 version.
I’m skeptical about this theater re-release but it’s cause of what I know about the original theatrical cuts and what happened to them cause of George Lucas.
I don’t care that much if it isn’t the original negative. What’s important to me, is that I have a version that is close as possible to the original theatre experience as possible. Would it be nice, if they used the original negatives? hell yes.
The one that just says Star Wars from 1977.
I hope that with the with the 2027 version, it’s made from the original negatives. If you are to trust google AI, then it’s looking promising on those part.
What I’m more excited about is, that from leaks it’s restored in 4K and there are talks about a physical homemedia version. As a physical movie collector that is great news.
So long as it’s not Greedo shooting first, or worse, them shooting at the same time then I’ll be very happy.
I don’t really have a problem with whoever shoots first, and I’ve never really understood why that was always the sticking point for a lot of Star Wars crazies, but it does make more sense for the situation if Han is the one shooting first. And to be fair, I never bought the excuse that it makes Han seem less villainous or whatever by not having him be the first to shoot, because eight years after that alteration was released, Yoda decapitates two clone troopers before they even fire, solely because he “feels” that they’re gonna shoot him (that they actually were is irrelevant to the point), and so what does it say about him?
You don’t think it makes Han less of a bad guy, but that is exactly why George changed it. To make Han not be a cold blooded murderer. Han was a rogue and a pirate. That’s why his character was a good match for the do-gooder pure good guy of Luke Skywalker.
Yoda has the force. The future isn’t always clear, especially the farther into time a Jedi tries to see, but in that moment he knew without a doubt that they were going to kill him.
I know, but visually, it’s the same thing. We see Yoda kill two people in self-defense knowing that they were about to smoke him. Han shot first because Greedo made it clear he was going to kill him then and there, and so, like Yoda, Han struck first in self-defense. Every society and philosophy aside from true pacifism - as far as I’m aware - holds self-defense to be a non-evil act, regardless of who person that enacts it is at any other moment. A full-fledged serial killer could kill in self-defense and that kill at least is justified, or at least is not an act of evil. So while I don’t really hinge the quality of the version on who shoots first in that scene, I’ve never bought Lucas’ explanation. It doesn’t make sense in or out of story.
But Jabba didn’t wanted Solo dead, otherwise he would’ve killed him moments later before he enters the Falcon - that scene was filmed 77 but later scrapped because of the limited time and money.
Jabba already had a price on Solo, or was about to place one, and Greedo told him that. Jabba was at the Falcon to take Han back to his base for failing him, and hear what he had to say for the record, but Han sweet-talked him into giving him more time for an extra amount. Besides, it sounded like Greedo had a personal dislike for Solo, and even if the bounty Jabba had for him hadn’t actually been placed yet, Greedo was gonna cash in either way, and he’d just tell Jabba later that it didn’t matter anymore what Han had to say for himself. He said he’d been looking forward to “this” for a long time, and that was Han’s cue that this was gonna go down. Whether he let Greedo get a shot off first and ducked it for his conscience, they both fired together, or Han shot him first, Solo had to kill him.
That’s what I was gonna add. Greedo even suggested if Han hand over the money he owed Jabba Greedo would forget he found him. Essentially he offered extortion in return for a hall pass ![]()
I think too what the audience knows at the time matters. Yoda has magic and can use magic to sense the future. We all know this. The stormtroopers are mowing the Jedi down left and right. There was no way Yoda could talk himself out of it. We know all of that. When we see Han kill Greedo we barely understand anything about the in world magic, but we have no reason to think Han has it. Then even later it’s confirmed Han can’t see the future through magic. Han’s a smuggler / rough neck pilot who’s in financial trouble with a gangster over a drug run gone bad.
Since the sequel trilogy began 10 years ago, I always Associated with Christmas. Every Christmas I watch episode 7,8 and 9. Due to their December release, they have become Christmas movies. However with my recent rewatch off all three. My overall ranking of the three film has changed a bit.
1) The Last Jedi - the more I watch it the better does it become. It has always been high on my list overall. It’s a movie first and foremost, then it’s Star Wars. Where the two others are more Star Wars karaoke.
The Bad: Some of the humour feels out of place, it doesn’t really fit my overall view of fun Star Wars banter. It’s not that it’s not funny, it just feels out of place compared to what I expect. When I watched it for the first time in the cinema it stuck out as soar thumb. Over the years with rewatches, it becomes less noticeable.
The good/Great: Personally I the majority of the movie to be extremely engaging. From the deeper dive into the force, to one of the best fight scenes with the throne room. To one of the best Yoda scenes in Star Wars overall.
Canto Bight might have been a dead end as a narrative for Finn and Rose, a quest that didn’t yield the outcome they hoped for. To some point meaningless on a smaller scale. However Finn and Rose ends up doing something much grander by accident, inspiring the next generation to stand up to oppression, igniting the spark of rebellion. Another great thing I enjoy, is that it cements that the force and the light doesn’t belong to the jedi. That hero’s doesn’t have to be part of a grant family of force users to make an impact. Something sadly the Rise of Skywalker throws out with the bath water.
2) The Rise of Skywalker - On a technical level it’s a mess of a film. It’s clearly the inferior of the three films. But hot damn I enjoy it, it’s fun cotton candy. it has some of my favourite C3PO gags in the hole saga. Even if the movie is a stark contrast to the Last jedi and undoes a lot of what Rian did, I still enjoy it.
The bad: The writing, the script, the majority of what makes a good movie
The good/ Great: C3PO just being 100% C3PO, Palpatine is grand and theatrical in scope, he’s a hoot to watch. Even if his return was handled like a last minut addition, where the writers ran out of time to come up with a good reason as too how he was resurrected. The fight scenes, the force dyad.
Even if I didn’t want to see Ben Solo redeemed, good damn they gave me a prequel hardon. Watching him and Rey stand before the Emperor with raised lightsabres was a cool throwback to the prequels. Also him doing a Han Solo like gesture before slaughtering the Knights of Ren, pure gold.
3) The Force Awakens - On a technical level, it’s a lot better then Rise of Skywalker. It has heart and relaunched Star Wars.
The Bad: It’s a slough to get through the middle act. It feels a bit empty, like a Disney Ride. It’s the Star Wars movie that I find most boring to watch, the one that I hardest to get through without using my phone as a second screen.
The Good/ the Great: The Characters, Poe, Finn and Rey are well crafted and charming, they are out anker in the story. Kylo Ren / Ben Solo is a great mirror to todays culture of toxic masculinity. In reality he’s a I.N.C.E.L.
His explosive temperament, makes him engaging to watch. Compared to his grandfathers more “calm” way of carrying himself.
I love all three films, I love the majority of Star Wars. Even when it’s bad. With the my recent rewatch The Last Jedi might have replaced The Empire Strike Backs/ Return of the Jedi as my favourite.
Anyone seen Visions season 3? Is it any good?
