If using alt+f4 is a crime, they should have included the ability to save in Freelancer or made it so you don’t have to be online to play the game properly. Neither was made the case, so alt+f4 is fair game.
I’ve never alt-F4d, or whatever the equivalent is on Xbox, and will never do so. It’s a simple matter of integrity. A standard I enjoy upholding. No judgements to those who don’t, or who have found excuses that are convincing to them, but I would greatly be annoyed by the nagging feeling of enjoying something that I didn’t really deserve. I compare it to looking at walkthroughs. There’s no way back from it. You outsourced the achievement to someone else, or to a cheat. And achievement being its own reward, it’s sad to have only that and know deep down you don’t deserve it.
Whatever it’s just a game!
I refer to my previous statement, which covers that. Additionally, for me, it’s not about whether I deserve it or not, it’s about 47 not failing a contract. Ergo, anything that keeps that from happening is perfectly acceptable. Avoid crutches where possible, but when necessary, do-overs are fair game. It’s no different than reloading a save, except it starts the whole mission over.
Hard agree. The thing I truly don’t get is why you would want a hardcore-trophy that means nothing anyway.
So you can know that it’s there and you left nothing unfinished.
I Alt+F4 all the time. Anytime a run is going to shit I Alt+F4. That’s how the game is most enjoyable to me and that’s all that matters. Enjoy it how you like.
“A matter of integrity”, no offence, but some of you really need to touch grass.
“No judgement on those who don’t, but you don’t truly deserve it, you lack integrity, it’s sad, …” Jesus Christ in what universe is that no judgement?
It’s a fucking video game. If that shit glitches out on me and my target walks away into the sky or falls through the ground, I’m Alt+F4’ing out of there instead of accepting my fate and telling myself and others that I’m a better person because I failed a mission I didn’t have to fail.
By that same token, yes, it’s just a video game.
Obviously, but if someone spent a week getting to the final showdown, playing one or two missions every night whenever they had time to play, it’s understandable that they won’t go “oh well, maybe next week” when a Lookout spots them through a solid wall and everyone escapes.
Heck, even if they Alt+F4 because they made a stupid mistake and things are about to go to shit. It doesn’t affect anyone but them, and if they want to enjoy the game in a way that someone else wouldn’t find enjoyable, just let them have fun.
I genuinely don’t understand the need to look down on others to feel better about yourself (general you, not talking about you specifically).
You can enjoy it the way you like. I am also allowed to not understand it.
If it truly glitches out, and you’re not making up stories about having been spotted through a wall when really you were just careless, that would be different to me. It has been when it happened on my own playthroughs. But I also know the game’s glitches by now, so it’s not that often anymore.
It’s not about being a better person at all. To me, it’s about internal feeling of achievement… That might not be important to some, and that’s cool. I just don’t wanna look at the my completed campaigns or trophies knowing they are somehow tainted. Accepting the rules of a failure, even if harder, will inevitably be more satisfying in the end.
Also, you do get better at Freelancer. I died a lot in the beginning, but not so much anymore and I’m thinking of just playing hardcore to feel some of that tension again. The consequence is also vastly overrated. Losing imaginary money you don’t have much use for and gear that will be replenished a quarter of the way through your next campaign… it’s not that bad.
But again, people should play how they want to. I just don’t understand it, and that’s ok.
Yes, I’m making up stories so the internet people won’t think I’m a bad gamer.
You get better at failing and then alt+f4ing and trying again and avoiding the fail, too.
That part was not directed at you, but I have my suspicions about some of people’s angry stories over on Reddit. Just saying, restarting because of truly gamebreaking glitches is different cus the game broke it’s own rules, not you.
Oh, I’ve seen those posts on Reddit too, and I agree that some of them sound like it was definitely their own fault!
But!
I’ve also seen how people on Reddit respond to anyone who has a hard time playing Freelancer. I can totally understand that someone doesn’t want to admit publicly that they failed/almost failed because they didn’t see that someone else was in the room next to them, when the reaction will be twenty people replying with “skill issue” and two or three people starting a comment chain to mock the OP.
I don’t Alt+F4 (or rather the PS5 equivalent) unless I’m either caught by a surprise bullshit glitch situation or figure out that I actually don’t have the time to complete the mission right now.
Had my first death in my 14th campaign, and that was absolutely due to my own stupidity and a severe lapse of judgement.
I’ve killed all the targets, decided to go after the courier on my way out, but didn’t have another banana with me, so I threw a hammer at his face, like any sane person would’ve done. The shoot-out was pretty fun, but it was clear from the start that that’d be it.
I swear, the one time I wasn’t carrying around tons of throwable shit to incapacitate a bunch of hostiles in case of emergency…
But I can also understand when someone would rather have a second chance. They’d still have to play the entire thing again, so I’d say they earned the trophy in 47’s trophy case regardless of how many restarts they treated themselves to.
I honestly don’t care. I’ve sped run a lot of contracts, used altF4 for ETs, and restarted so many times, but when it comes to freelancer, I honestly don’t care. I have AltF4 before but not cuz of a glitch, but because I wanted to try something. But regularly, I don’t restart even if I been screwed over. I’m just too old to care about winning at video games now. lol. I’ve been playing hitman trilogy since the beta so freelancer is my time to just chill now. Win or lose, I just laugh it off.
You don’t have to understand it. It’s a fine thing that you can enjoy the game the way you want to enjoy it and others can enjoy it the way they want to enjoy it and neither’s enjoyment detracts from the other. I do take offense when people come into forums like this and shit talk other people for how they play a singleplayer game by themselves.
If you don’t shave your head, wear a suit, and play the game in full body VR with all UI elements turned off and a mod that deletes your hard drive if you die, can you even say you achieved anything in this game? If someone that hardcore came along and declared that all other forms of playing the game were simply cheating, would you feel that your own achievements were diminished? To me, it sounds like a silly pissing contest to make people feel better about themselves (i.e. COPE) at the expense of others.
I feel a meme coming on…
Got a question,
Does placing the canister of water or oil on the ground and shooting it, cause a leak or does it have to be poured?
That’s a bit of a false equivalence. That goes outside of the actual rules of the gameplay, which is all I’m personally choosing to adhere to.
It might sound like that to you. That would indeed be the most ungenerous reading. But I truly don’t care about feeling better about myself from a videogame, because I don’t get my self worth from it.
I see a lot of people agreeing that using alt+f4 is basically the only reasonable way to play this game, because IO is such an awful company for giving us this (very free) glitched mess of a mode. I just want to add my two cents to balance those scales, and display that there are other ways of thinking about it.
Maybe someone will discover that they can chose to listen to that little voice inside that haunts them when they cheat, and their experience will be better for it. If that voice is not there, cool… my post is not for you. I have a feeling that that voice is what’s causing some of the strong reactions to standpoints like mine though. Some people are looking for validation for using restarts, and they’re so afraid that the sound of that voice will be amplified if they’re challenged.
