Freelancer - General Discussion

I have some good news: I completed my first Freelancer campaign. Kindof screwed up the final showdown though, got caught by a lookout and the target tried to run. Only was able to catch them as they were in the Berlin basement and running up the stairs so was able to ambush them there.

I’ve had fun, once you start getting into the rhythm of Freelancer and start being smart with what optional objectives you decide to bother with, it can be quite a fun time and a good way of breaking you out of your habits that you stick to in the main missions.

I’ve unlocked hardcore mode. Considering what that entails and some of the comments on here regarding it, I don’t think I’m ever going to touch it.

Freelancer quite a fun relaxing thing to play casually, I’m stuck at home recovering from pneumonia so just booting up Freelancer and doing a few missions is fun. I’ll probably move on to something else soon, probably when I inevitably fuck up next, but I’ve had fun.

I still haven’t played Ambrose Island yet, should probably get around to that.

Same issue in Hokkaido when you have extract data from computer, like in The Controller or The Fugitive - 47’s hands float above keyboard, which looks very awkward.

Bro, what?? It’s a good mission, especially for one given for free. :+1:

I was of that opinion, but then IOI released the Black Bruiser suit which was unlocked by beating Hardcore. Surprisingly, I really enjoyed my Hardcore run. Once you feel better, its definitely worth having a go at it. Hope you feel better soon :+1:t2:

Looks to be a common problem with that type of animation across the game in my opinion. We may not see a fix for it, but I guess it’s not to the end of the world :slightly_smiling_face:

Anyone else getting randomly compromised a period of time after sniping someone? What I mean is that I just had a second situation where I shot someone with a sniper rifle, ran away from the spot and a good solid while after the shot when I’m well out of any alerted guards range “hunted” pops up above the minimap and I lose the “do not blow your disguise” objective.
This time it was in a Sapienza showdown. I shot the leader from church tower as he was walking through the town square, cleanly slipped out and only got compromised when I was already running through the streets. Beyond that one shot and some trespassing I did 0 illegal actions during that mission.
I don’t think it was some sort of undiscovered Assassins’ sixth sense either, since I had a similar thing happen during a regular mission in Ambrose.

It’s one of my biggest frustrations. I hate sniping someone from miles away with a silenced sniper but then the guards in the area instantly know where 47 is located and come running armed and ready to open fire.

I can certainly sympathise with your frustrations. What I often do to try and counter the god-sense of the guards is change disguises immediately after firing your sniper. When you fire from a position, there is an invisible zone of hostility created around your position and guards who come from being alerted will assume you to be the shooter, regardless if you have the weapon equipped. As soon as you change disguise however, I’ve noticed it reduces the hostility (but as is the RNG of the AI in this game, I still have had moments where I’ve been assumed hostile regardless). I know there’s some advanced playstyles where you can panic NPCs and guards to make you invisible from illegal actions but I’m not educated in that at all so I won’t comment on that.

What it comes down to I think is just absolutely taking as much wide a path you can feasibly make from where you shot from and where the targets are. The fewer times you’ve been seen by guards or any civilians the better.

My problem isn’t that the guards can run to the exact spot a shot was fired from. My problem is that I can be half a map away from that place by the time they get there and somehow still become compromised.

Perhaps you got spotted by someone nearby but didn’t notice it, and they just notified the guards after they calmed down from their search routine?

What you’re talking about does sound familiar, though I can’t say its happened often enough for me to remember.

Finally found some time to play Hitman again. Went completely overboard with Colorado. Ko’d everyone on the map just to kill three targets. Was worth it.

Well, maybe at some point in the future. I’m not that bothered about suit unlocks, but it does seem like a mode that demands a lot of the player, especially when every mission can fail the campaign. Maybe also try Prestige at some point.

Anyway, astoundingly, I managed to beat my second campaign in a row. Perhaps I’ve just acclimated to the game mode, although my final mission I got very lucky. New York, 9 suspects, I managed to isolate the first suspect and kill him, and it turned out he was the target. Less than 5 minutes, that went perfectly.

I think I’m getting better at the strengths and weaknesses of maps in Freelancer. Berlin I find is great for Showdowns because it is so easy to use the top of the biker gang hide out as a bait spot for phone calls, since the biker building is so easy to clear of goons, even more so now that the ICA agents are no longer on the map.

Some maps though… I’ve actually reached the point now that I automatically veto any Syndicate that uses Colorado. It is just sheer misery in Freelancer. It was already my least favourite map in the main campaign, but at least there you could mitigate some issues by choosing to start in an area with a disguise equipped. It is just horrible constantly spawning outside in your suit, trying to get inside with guards on patrol, and that if you screw up, and the map goes on high alert you have an entire army after you. Just, no thanks. I need to play Ambrose soon as well since I veto any Syndicate with that map too since I want to ideally beat the main mission a few times before I visit it in Freelancer, and it means that with 2 maps of the 19 (I think?) in rotation, it means a lot of Syndicates are vetoed by me.

Alerted territories are a mixed bag as well, mainly due to whether the map was from Hitman 1, 2, or 3, since how hard and tedious the map’s pro difficulty is depends on when it came out. Sapienza can become a bit of a tedious slog, Bangkok just has needless enforcers everywhere. I don’t know who decided to make all the guards in the Mumbai slums enforcers even when you are in a suit but it is so tedious.

Some nitpicks. I’ve completed the shotgun and assault rifle walls in my hideout, and have only 2 SMGs left to collect. Disappointed that the vendors in the maps don’t fill up their empty stuff with more stock but instead it just empties the respective assault rifle and shotgun spots. I can understand having to limit the item box stuff to 3 at a time since they’re so cheap and easy to buy, but don’t understand why other guns/melee weapons can’t start filling up the other slots. Maybe worried it would make it too easy to aquire high rarity items? Also annoyed that this applies to the hideouts reward box, got all the poisons and tranq guns, now the item box only gives me 2 items to choose from at a time. Don’t understand that limitation.

I know this is my fault, but I do wish that after you have chosen your mission, your UI or even your F1 menu lists the number of couriers and safes on the map. Took a prestige objective to blow up a safe, only to arrive on the map and realise that this map has no safe to blow up. My own fault, but I wish this was listed somewhere.

I also feel wish Couriers were highlighted on the map like targets, rather than just the icon above their heads that vanishes after a certain distance. A few times I’ve resorted to sniping the courier, letting the heat die down, then returning to collect the Merces, but it can be a little annoying because from a sniper vantage I can’t see the Courier icon. I don’t see why Couriers couldn’t be highlighted a different colour from the targets, like green for instance? Maybe they think it would be too busy, especially on a map that can have 4 targets and 3 Couriers?

I wish supply drops were better. Maybe it’s my own bad luck but the RNG on these things seems pretty bad. It seems like over 50% of the time its 3 items with no rarity, and half of those times 3 items that are worthless, like a a melee weapon and 2 distractions. Sometimes you can get rat poison or a propane tank but a lot of the time, it feels like a waste of time. I know you can get Merces and 2 times now, I have received 2 Rare Pistols, so sometimes they can be rewarding. But otherwise, I don’t feel the need to search the map for them, which I would assume is the intention since the map doesn’t list them and they only appear on the mini-map within a certain radius. I never put myself at high risk just to open a supply drop.

Otherwise, yeah, I’m having fun, it feels good now that my weapon collection is clearly filling up now.

Random observations:

My favourite trader is a woman in a bikini on Haven Island, hanging out in the public shower, who somehow manages to sell me a big SMG. Where was she hiding it?

Guards turning 180 degrees can happen, I had one instance where I snuck in, the guy was leaning over the table, I go to choke him and he still manages to spin around 180 to try and punch me before I put him down. Irritating.

I don’t know if this is a thing that has always existed in China, if this is a bug or if this is as intended. Tier 1 guards guarding an entrance insist on frisking me, wearing a Tier 1 guard outfit. Twice I ran through them thinking I was fine because on every other map, guards will usually just let the same guard outfit through without a fuss. Here, they turn hostile and they try to kill me. I remember this, don’t let it happen again. Killed all the targets in China, need to get out of the ICA Facility to leave the level but forget my sniper rifle. Run through Tier 1 guards in a Tier 2 security outfit, they wanted to frisk me, then turn hostile and try to murder me. Again, can’t think of any other map that has happened before, and why would they frisk me when all the Tier 2 guards are clearly armed with guns on their backs? Is this an intentional part of China or am I really misunderstanding this?

Bodies can’t be found if there is noone to find the bodies.

now I want to see someone mod the sloth escalations vitality gimmick into freelancer and complete an entire hardcore campaign with said mod

Oh yeah, that’s a known issue in Mumbai. Never happened to me though, I saw the clips on Reddit back when Freelancer came out and completely avoid this elevator shaft death trap.

Never encountered it before. Now ive learned my lesson!!

Yeah Hardcore is really challenging, but it feels rewarding once you’ve completed it in the end. I’ve done the Prestige once and since regained all my weapons, but I currently have no plans to do it again at the moment because I like having all my weapons available and ready to use

Last night I completed my first Hardcore campaign (slowly played it off and on over the last 4 months :joy:), and then I hit that prestige button.

It was bitter sweet, losing everything… and back to square one… but when I started normal mode for the first time in what feels like 8 months, it’s such a breathe of fresh air.

I’m so accustomed to Targets and lookouts and assassins being alerted everywhere and able to see through most disguises.

It’s also fun entering missions with a loadout of household items since I lost all of my weapons.

This is a weird bug, or unintended programming, in Chongqing. The Tier 1 security guards frisk you at both entry points, even if you’re in a security guard outfit.

The only other time I can think of this happening was in an ET in Mendoza. (I think it was Philo’s mission but it might have been Jordana’s.) There’s a new security guard posted at the top of the stairs to the theater, and he demands to frisk you even if you’re also dressed as a security guard.

Never seen that before. It’s hilarious, and also, sorry for your [literal] loss.
