I’ve never had all the suspects start off in that location before
Never?! Happens every time I start a Dartmoor showdown, at least from that starting point.
Yeah it’s happened to me a few times in Dartmoor showdowns as well. Paris also had lots of targets lining up at the entrance when I did final showdowns here.
Not that I’ve noticed anyway. To be fair, I seem to spawn a lot at the campaign start in Dartmoor so maybe that’s why? even if I start over near the greenhouse area, I never normally get all suspects spawning together like that at the entrance gates. I usually get maybe three, then the rest are either located upstairs or near the graveyard
Happens with the assassins too. They all spawn in one place and they head over to whoever they follow.
Quite often in Berlin you’ll see them all walking out of the area where the Hippo Easter egg is.
Also in Santa Fortuna, where you can very conveniently get rid of all assassins in one go.
What locations in your opinion are better or worse in Freelancer than in main game? Here’s my tier list:
-
Better: Paris, Bangkok, New York, Dubai, Dartmoor, Mendoza
I think all of these maps benefitted from having new targets, the encouragement to explore and any changes that Freelancer made.
I think Paris, New York and Mendoza were always pretty great but I just like having new stuff to do on here. Bangkok is never my favorite but I dont see how anyone could argue that having targets around the hotel and a new starting location and exit doesnt improve the map.
Dartmoor I hear grumblings about but in my opinion these changes made it into a real map that’s challenging to sneak around in and fun to mess around in. Showdowns are fun and sniping in TT missions is fun.
Dubai benefits from any new content, it’s a pretty small map but it’s got a lot of different interconnected parts that make it fun to play around in. I think it could use more content because there’s starting locations from escalations that could have been used and areas targets never go to but it’s fun -
About the same: Colorado, Hokkaido, Santa Fortuna, Isle of Sgail, Haven Island, Berlin, Ambrose
I think Colorado in Freelancer can be pretty easy and fun, depending on ur methodology and luck. I think even an alerted territory can be aced if you make and take some explosives to drop on people.
Hokkaido gets a bad rap but I love it because it’s a small map with a lot to do and targets isolate themselves a lot in the map. On alerted this eers more on worse but that again is also dependent on what spawns and targets you get. Alerted has benefits with some of the guard spawns being self-isolating
Santa Fortuna and Isle of Sgail can be way too much to navigate, but theyre not always unfun to get around in. I think Showdowns especially arent too bad in either depending on the disguises and spawns you get. You also have lots of free disguises and places to hide
Haven Island and Berlin err on being worse because I think the lack of ICA Agents takes away a lot of Berlin’s challenge and personality. It can be good for Showdowns but the map feels like it’s missing something that new targets doesnt add back in. Haven again really depends because the sniping opportunities, the ease of getting around and new targets are fun but it’s way more random now for a map that’s already random. Ambrose I like just fine but it’s easy to die without a sniper -
Depends: Mumbai, Whittleton Creek, Chongqing
I really like Mumbai and Whittleton Creek as maps but you sometimes get really bad spawns. For Whittleton the problem is the map can play itself, with Mumbai the map can have no gameplay at all. Chongqing’s a tough one because again it depends on spawns of targets and what youre doing. I think too much of Chongqing’s variety is in navigation between Fortresses, but the individual areas are contextually interesting. The Facility especially is kind of a big circle where you either go around the whole thing to get to one staircase or you take the other one that’s closest to you to get to the bottom. But the Block and Facility have lots of ways to get in and out and between which can be good for devising new strategies, especially with sniping -
Worse: Sapienza, Marrakesh, Miami
Sapienza and Miami suffer from being so big that you will have to make trecks to areas you dont like inevitably. There’s way too many instances where the target spawns in the Lab for example. Theyre so fun in Freelancer when it comes to Showdowns but TT missions theyre essentially campaign filler. Marrakesh is a slog no matter what youre playing but Alerted Territory - School spawn is basically the end of your campaign and your fun.
I’d say Mumbai and Chongqing are both switched in Freelancer from the main game, for me - Mumbai worse, Chongqing better - for the very same reasons why I have them opposite in the main game: their NPC populations. In the main game, I admire Mumbai for its heavy population, and am disappointed by Chongqing’s comparatively sparse population, for a major Chinese city. However, in Freelancer, this makes Chongqing so much easier to work with in the randomization of targets, and Mumbai so much harder.
I used to think the same but it’s actually not that bad. If you wait for one of the guards to come near the window you can distract him into the area you start in and take his disguise, then get the two free bombs and blow up any annoying targets in the market / consulate. Way less annoying than the Hokkaido morgue start or the Colorado water tower start.
Talking of Marrakesh, I took the time to look, and follow, the possible takedown targets in the market, all very public and in crowds. Because, like many I believe, I started by being dumbfounded by them, hating them, and just explosive-ducky or rooftop sniping them.
But, after some time, each of them actually have at least one sure-fire opportunities. Most of them quite unique. Like :
- the cafe waiter stops beneath the droppable cafe sign
- the shop owner will try to sell 47 something and follow him around
- multiple “generic” npcs go and use the payphones you can sabotage
- all of the poison stops
It did not made Marrakesh great (everything is slow, and flow breaking), but it’s always a nice stop to have as long as you bring the right tools.
Miami is the same in some ways. Many possible targets that are in public but have clear opportunities, (I particularly like the mechanic that smokes by a gasoline drum)
Those are the two main maps that give me a sense of progressive mastery of the Freelancer takedowns. The rest of the maps are interesting, but usually give NPCs that are “ordinary play”, the kind you could see taking down in the main mission to gain a disguise on your way to the story target.
Miami and Marrakesh are putting targets in what would usually be the careless, unstopped in, and unpondered map traversal.
And I like what it brought in.
Colorado.
The worst location of the whole trilogy.
Simple
I totally agree.
Imagine this! You’re playing Hardcore Mode, you’re at the end of the Campaign on the Showdown and you pick Silent Assassin - Suit Only? I’d rather eat my own crap haha
In reply to the OP, Freelancer has definitely made cool additions to locations.
Yeah, I’m stopping right there, because I’m not gonna ever play hardcore mode again unless new challenges are opened that require it, and so I would never handicap myself playing that goddamned mode anyway.
Speak for yourself. Lol
I love Colorado even more in freelancer. And now even more in showdowns. Going for SA on showdowns in Colorado is so fun.
I got SA/SO once. But i did have to use a restart.
But i got an easy one.
You, sir, are menially insane (I be joking, I like it too)
Even on Hardcore mode?
Colorado is great in Freelancer. The easiest map to ko everyone – even in suit only. And it’s small enough for any showdown.
Yep. And even with water tower start.
