Game News Thread

I honestly think if this version was released back then, the franchise would be still alive and chewing bubblegum.

Indeed it would have. Doom 3 and HL2 was 3 years away from release and DNF2001 already had feature that would be in those games. Instead of being innovative, DNF ended up as a joke. A bad one.

Hope one they we’ll see the 2002 build which is considered the most complete version before they scrapped everything

Modders will put that content to good use

Sweet new Sterling video going up soon!

Airhead, a Metroidvania game with a difference, was announced in 2021 and hopefully is due to release sometime later this year for all major platforms. I found a really interesting interview with developer and Octato’s co-founder, Andreas Bødker:

There’s a YouTube link on the page if you want to see the showcase video.

Something I’ve been keeping an eye on. Suppose to be releasing September 8, next week.

Goddamn, this is pitiful. :grimacing:

I mean they couldn’t even implement rain because of limitations which is weird because the game engine was build on the same one from Agents of Mayhem…

Wow, I hate to be harsh but that was nothing but piss poor excuses.

I mean wouldn’t that mean pretendingAoM was the height of technological achievement and not a generic hero shooter Volition made to cash in on the hero shooter craze. Not like it was a benchmark or anything.

Hell even not having rain still makes it leagues better than 4 which didn’t even have a day/night cycle or any weather at all. In fact every Saints Row(eve the new one) is better than 4.

i dunno, man. i’m no dev or anything, but if making working doors in games is super hard (or so i hear), i can’t imagine making a decent weather cycle is particularly easy either.

like, i’m sure they would’ve added it if they could because, well, why not? it could’ve been fucking up all kinds of stuff though, so maybe it was for the best?

They were able to accomplish the weather and much more with SR2, judging by the comparison video. The only thing I see that SR 2022 actually does better is graphics. That’s like taking one step forward and then ten steps backwards.

You can’t just copy features of an old game to a new one. Things have to be implemented from the scratch when using a new engine. I guess it is a matter of not-enough-time than devs being unable to do the job.

IMO, if you can’t match or exceed what came before, then you shouldn’t bother making the game in the first place.

So you think they never planned to do these things? Why?

Why does it even need to rain in a game that takes place in one of the driest regions of America?

Like I wouldn’t even think of putting rain in the game, I would add dust storms before I eve thought of adding rain. Rain would also have to be a bitch to program right? Because it isn’t just making a graphic of droplets anymore it would be new lighting, new physics, new models and a bunch of other stuff.

Rain is often a on-or-off kind of thing for surface properties or spaces NPCs are in which alters the behavior. Much less complicated than doors, but yeah with being one of the driest area in America they might just not need rain.

Even IO had trouble making a storm in Haven so clearly it isn’t something you can whip up on a short timeframe

I assume the storm in Haven was not that hard to do but still something that requires time that was needed elsewhere for Hitman before that.

I guess the rain in China was a bigger deal since it alters NPC behavior (using umbrellas) and was worth to delay until there were better reflection systems. They might also hoped to ship it with working raytracing.

i imagine that the new game is more intensive across the board. again, not a dev but i don’t think it’s all that straight forward.

i assume that was what they planned to do :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes: doesn’t always work out.

Judging by the link EvilGeniusRo posted, they only compared SR 2022 with SR4, as if that was the only blueprint to go by. Maybe I’m being unfair but this is just my personal preference for any game.
