Australia is both similar enough (white, English speaking, uses dollars) but also physically far away enough that US pundits like to invent all kinds of fantasies about it in order to imagine it as either an ideal or dystopian version of their own society.
For years it was the “Australia ended gun violence and mass killings by passing a gun law” which largely ignored all other factors (like that we have welfare, health care, etc)… including that we had a massive mass killing the following year (someone set fire to a hotel) and a couple of attempted mssacres (it turns out shooting running targets is hard).
Australia was dystopian when we were trying to implement the Clean Feed firewall, without addressing y’know, due to the Classification Board the government censors stuff daily and had been trying to bring in a Internet control firewall since like…1999.
Now its dystopian because of Covid controls largely because they can use footage of Sydney, and holiday locations, point to sporting events and scream “See! If we allow this in Australia, it could happen here!” and the right wing audience laps it up because they forgot that Australia is a pro-censorship, anti-gun latte sipping hippie paradise.

Gotta love how this guy’s lawyer is using the “he had a heated investor moment” as their defence of his actions. Like if you get emotional (which he had good reason to) and your first instinct is to get extremely aggressive and racist then you might just be an angry racist.
He was a director at Merrill Lynch by the way and he was in the top 25 richest people in Connecticut or something.
