Helluva few months of summer sport coming up. What’s everyone looking forward to?
The Real Madrid trophy Champions league final tonight and then onto the Euros. Where we can all predict with certainty that England will reach the quarters or semis and then lose on penalties, the only real question is will it be to Germany, France or an outsider like Spain or Portugal? Place your bets now!
Second week of Roland Garros then Wimbledon. Can Emma Raducanu play more than 20 minutes of tennis without getting injured? Will she win more than 2 matches in a row ever again? The answer to both questions is no but I’ll watch anyway.
NBA finals - I’d rather shave my testicles with a rusty cheesegrater than Boston win an inevitable 18th but I suppose I’ll still watch through my tears just in case Luka and Kyrie can produce a miracle.
UFC - some great cards coming up including the return of Connor McGregor -despicable human being but the hype train and showmanship is always fun to watch.
And then of course it’s the big one, the Olympics… just a smorgasbord of events, where everyone in the office and down the pub suddenly become armchair experts in synchronised swimming and fencing. You enthusiastically watch sports you’d never normally take notice of such as Kayaking and taekwondo at 10 o’clock in the morning!
I’m not a big basketball fan (especially with the Raptors being in a rebuild this year) but they had to go through 2 of the top 3 teams in the western conference to get here so logic has it they should be able to at least put up a fight, no?
I mean, I would hope so - Luka’s postseason has been on fire.
I’m just being naturally pessimistic, it’s felt so inevitable that Boston has been on course for the championship for months now, its hard to see any other result.
Any soccer fans around here? Euro 2024 is pretty nice so far, I think. Spain and Germany looking good, while England disappointed a little. Stray observation: Quite a few own goals as well as long-distance goals.
The amount of OGs is quite baffling really. Can´t those punks these days tell one goal from the other? (slightly exaggerating of course, but there´s really way too many of them)
I thought this Euro would have been a good opportunity to make him no. 1. Guess he can only hope to still be as strong when Neuer retires so he doesn’t get skipped altogether.
Maybe a sign of teams having too many defenders near the goal, increasing the chances of deflecting shots.
Stupid American question inbound… in a deflection own goal situation does the guy who took the shot still get credit for the goal?
What about when it’s clearly an error by the defender and not just a situation where they tried their best and it still went in? Does the score keeper have some latitude to decide these things?
the goal will be named after him and counted in the game, but not officially counted. by which I mean you wouldn’t be awarded the golden shoe by scoring a ton of OGs.
really depends on the situation, whether it was a direct and unfortunate mis-shot or a pinball situation.
Here are a few observations from a Swiss perspective:
We have a similar situation: Yann Sommer is our number 1. He’s great, won the italian league with Inter, played everywhere… But a lot of the fans would prefer Gregor Kobel. He’s taller, fast and played in the Champions League Final with Dortmund.
Also from a Swiss perspective: The goal from Scotland was a deflection. Officially awarded to Scott McTominay even though it was a deflection from the leg of Fabian Schär.
The official definition for an own goal: An own goal is scored when a player directs the ball into their own goal without an opponent having scored – after a pass, a cross or a throw-in that would otherwise not go into the goal.
Own goals so far: 5
Own goals 2021: 11
Own goals 2016: 3
Own goals 2012: 1
Own goals 2008: 0
Own goals 2004: 2
Own goals 2000: 1
Own goals 1996: 1
Own goals 1992: 0
Own goals 1988: 0
Having two excellent goalies to choose from… Poor Germany and Switzerland
But yeah, it´s a bit unfair to the guy who doesn´t get picked as no. 1. You can´t exactly shuffle them around as much as the rest of the roster.
Thanks for the explanation. I’m comparing this to 1) American football where a quarterback can have an absolutely perfect pass directly to the the receiver, but if instead of catching the ball that receiver tips the ball into the air and the defender catches it it counts as the quarterback throwing an interception. No wiggle room at all even though the QB did nothing wrong. Also 2) Baseball where what is and what is not a fielding error has some wiggle room and the official scorekeeper has some leeway. Sometimes the exact same thing happens twice in a game and the home team player doesn’t get an error for it while the visiting team player does OR vice versa is the scorekeeper would rather give the home team player credit for a hit. MLB tightened the guidelines a few years ago, but it’s still tremendously subjective.
Congrats to the Spanish! Good game for the Germans.
Lots of yellow cards handed out.
Now, I hope that the French will win other than by an own goal or a penalty.
That massive blunder by the ref left a sour taste in my mouth. The Germans deserved (and wanted) to win more. Shame so many of their shots ended nowhere.
