Movies You’ve Only Just Watched

Beirut with Jon Hamm + Rosamund Pike

Jon plays a CIA guy who leaves it all behind and then gets roped back into the game. Rosamund plays an on the ground operative in a man’s world (late 70 early 80s). It’s so good but just didn’t make a splash. I wonder if it’s bc when Body of Lies came out the overall reaction (besides wow this was a good film) was “it’s all ducked up, but at least were there” and now the overall reaction has changed to “it’s all ducked up, maybe it’s just a giant waste?” I’m not saying it’s as good as body of lies, it isn’t, but it’s pretty good and has a similar story about a disgruntled spook who must save a friend. Similar actually to spy game as well with Pitt and Redford (another good one). Anyway I wonder if the general change in attitude towards all that cloak and dagger stuff hurt the movies rating? It’s excellent but it’s in netflicks hidden gems category bc it just didn’t do well.

It’s totally worth your time if you like spy stuff though. Side note: there is an insignificant scene of no more than 2 min during a labor mediation that is just fucking hysterical bc it’s 100% accurate and really shows how negotiations can disintegrate at any time.

I just saw Turning Red,

Jesus fuck that was unexpectedly good, many of the female centric parts didn’t click with me, cause I happen to be a dude. But i can imagine this movie being really good for young girls who are just starting to go through their growing pains.
Here it is on my pixar movie tierlist

I don’t know what past me was on, thinking different genres or scopes meant I couldn’t quantify the value of Turning Red. Nah, screw that. It’s a 9/10 movie for me for sure. Just saw it, again, just now. I guess I was on a hype high after watching it and was in denial of it claiming one of my top spots. :man_shrugging: It’s really freakin’ good.

[extra note: I recognized the Grandmother’s voice on first watch, finally looked it up: it’s Wai Ching Ho – she played the villain Madame Gao in the Marvel Netflix series! Cool.]

Another watch means paying attention to details. Caught a few nice ones.

Love this quick-frame jump she does.

Also here, tier list.

Yes, I haven’t yet seen Coco, Luca, or Good Dinosaur. I’m of the opinion that Pixar’s movies are usually good, enjoyable stuff at the least – or so far.

We don’t talk about Cars 2. Vividly remember walking out of the theater annoyed, and scrubbed every inch of that movie from my brain.

Finally, somebody puts Cars 2 in its proper place. The only good thing about that film is that it definitively proves the Cars universe has its own version of the Crusades, the Carsades if you will.

I honestly don’t know why people hate that movie so much. It’s not a bad movie; bad for a Pixar movie, perhaps, but not bad on its own merits. The best part of it is Michael Caine’s dead serious delivery throughout the whole thing.

No I am pretty sure it is bad on its own merits. Mostly because the comedy is so obnoxious that I don’t even think a kid would even laugh at it and mostly because the plot is a mish-mash of tired comedy tropes and spy fiction tropes. Plus I really fucking hate Larry the Cable Guy’s schtick thus the film is like when you jam your hand in a functioning combine harvester. (That’s how you know your a redneck)

Everyone has A Bug’s Life way too freaking high, but other than that, everyone’s entitled to their own opinions.

Most probably an unpopular opinion but I not only consider Cars 2 as the best Cars movie, but also one of the top five animations of all times. It just kinda cought my interest in the first time and the next 27 times I watched it. The real worst one is Cars 3.

Chicken Little, my God I haven’t thought about that film in ages. I used to watch it all the time when I was a little kid, I bet it would be odd to watch it now.

I never managed to watch more than 5 minutes of it. Would’ve gotten distracted fairly easy.

Rogue One… I mean, we already knew that not only they are going to successfully steal the data but die afterward as we didn’t see them in the other movies thus there was no passion to see till the end, I knew what was going to happen.

Ehh, even if ya know the ending I still think the main story itself is pretty great.

When I first saw it, I did not expect them to die, just thought they’d fade into the background, since they’re really side-characters in the whole star wars mythos.
(Plus I expected them to stick around for Disney spinoffs, etc. Surprisingly, it was Disney execs that pushed for them to die in the end.)

I caught a short clip of this on FB, then decided to look it up. It’s on Crunchyroll and I’m up to Ep. 8…

Hajime No Ippo, The Fighting!

It’s an anime about a high-schooler that gets into boxing. Seems pretty good so far!

Saw the Batman on Saturday, it was very good, but it could have been an hour shorter tbh.
Why hasn’t nobody put together a Blood Money Video with Riddlers Version of Ave Maria yet?

Just watched Be Kind Rewind and I loved it.

Great balance of comedy and more dramatically stuff, a lot of great shots and just the creative ways they made low budget effects in the movie itself never failed to make me smile.

The Batman

Interesting flick. I like this gothic, thriller-mystery vibe that Matt Reeves gave to it. The Batman is a more “realistic” take on the dark knight. The villians aren’t idolized like eccentric comic characters but rather as disturbing psychopats and scumbags. With Riddler vaguely based on the zodiac killer and Penguin and Falcone on classic NYC mobsters, it gave a fantastic dark tone to the superhero genre, which I really like. Especially for a Batman movie.

I was honestly surprised by the writing of this film. A complicated mystery was one of the last things I expected in a Batman movie. Though it works pretty well with all the crazy riddles and hidden family ties. The story was thought out well and it was a fun ride to connect the dots during the adventure. And so was the acting. Pattinson as Bruce Wayne was suprisinly good. He spend 95% of the movie in the bat suit, so there wasn’t any boring personal side stories going on. I doubted his casting beforehand but I’m satisfied with his performance. Same goes for Paul Dano as Riddler. Good thing he wore the mask, since imo his face doesn’t fit the character that much. His performance, however, was believable and bone chilling disturbing.

The only villian that didn’t meet his full potential in my opinion is Colin Farrell as Penguin. He was more of a sideman to Falcone rather than a bigshot crimelord himself this time around. I guess its fine for the story, but with Penguin in the mix, you’d expect something more ambitious. A bit of a shame, but his one-on-one scenes with batman were still a blast to watch. Props to Farrell and the prosthetics team for creating such a cool version of the Penguin. However, I’d like to see him meet his full potential in a possible sequel.

My score: 8/10. Great flick. If there will be a sequel, I’d like Mr. Freeze, Poison Ivy and/or Clayface as villians. I’m curious what they can make of that. And please not another Joker like was hinted at in the deleted scene.

Speaking of Batman, i just realized who’s sitting in the background Mafia meeting in the dark Knight

Its the one and only Richard Divizio, who portrayed Kano, Baraka, Quan Chi, Kabal and many more in the original Mortal Kombat Games! I have a signed poster of him in my living room :joy:
