Movies You’ve Only Just Watched

That’s funny bc Bruce Willis was so much not a tough guy that the studio thought die hard would flop and even took his face off the posters at one point. Something tells me Jason has been pretty tough looking his whole life.

Well to be fair Willis was most famous for Moonlighting before the film, he wouldn’t be considered an action hero until after Die Hard. Die Hard was in such development hell at one point it was supposed to be a John Matrix (Commando) film.

It’s about a job interview puzzle type thing. Honestly, the premise was really good but the ending kind of sucked. This kind of reminded me of how Google used to ask useless but fun questions like ‘how long would it take to wash all the windows in New York’. Like, we get the idea but it doesn’t actually help pick useful candidates. Google learned that a long time ago and stopped using them, but this is like that and I feel the ending proves it. They lost the best people during the processes and ended with arguably some of the worst for the tasks.

Not a bad movie, just a disappointing ending, I’d say.

Yesterday I watched Zack Snyder’s Justice League. If you didn’t like Man of Steel or Batman V Superman Director’s cut, then you probably won’t enjoy his cut.

The 2017 is a hole different movie and at the time I found it okay, but a dull and forgettable experience like the majority MCU movies. So I was pretty excited hearing that we where getting a Snyder cut, my interest in the movie wouldn’t reflect weather or not I would ultimately enjoy it. To me there is something very interesting in seeing a directors “pure” vision for a movie flaws and all.

Luckily for me I really enjoyed it, then again I also liked a flawed film like the director’s cut of BvS. The overall movie reminded me a lot of his taken on ‘Watchmen’ , especially the way it was shot and the use of music to portray characters. Flash and Cyborg had a lot more screen time and character development in this movie, which was a nice change from the 2017 version. Steppenwolf also had a lot more screen time and motivation in this version, ultimately setting up Darkseid and the post apocalyptic world we saw glimpse of in BvS.

A grip I have with the movie is that it uses IMAX aspect ratio of 4:3, meaning that it isn’t a widescreen movie and that I had to ration my snacks for the 4 hours playtime.

I hope to see Snyder getting the chance to finish his movie trilogy.

Oh God I loathe Zack’s Watchmen film every single version pales in comparison to the original and each versions shows Snyder’s inability to comprehend the story and I am one of the ten people on Earth that finds the OGN overrated.

I saw The Lighthouse tonight. Boy, I should have looked up a bit more about this film, 'cause I was under the impression it was some simple arthouse cinema – some character study on loneliness and isolation. But no, it’s a pretty creepy horror movie about loneliness and isolation, with a whole lotta art to it.

It stars Robert Pattinson and Willem Dafoe as two Lighthouse keepers, sent to take care of a lighthouse together for 4 weeks.
Well, those 4 weeks turn into a lot longer than that, as Pattinson’s character is constantly berated, gaslighted and put to work by Dafoe, whose possibly-wise, yet salty sea captain demeanor often stays isolated in the Lighthouse, refusing to let Pattinson take a shift to take care of it.

There’s creepy hallucinations, a constant blaring foghorn, old sea curses and some awesome old-English dialogue from the two main actors. The score is especially captivating, with some very tense and booming horns, making the whole film seem like it’s an epic drama involving the gods (and fun fact, part of it is based off of Greek mythology). The film is shot in black-and-white and in a 4:3 aspect ratio, to really give it an aged look.

It’s a good film, with a lot of thinking within it. You’re gonna have to take a breather after finishing it.
Also there’s this awesome, creepy monologue Dafoe has near the middle of the film. He doesn’t blink once for nearly 2 minutes straight. Great scene overall too

I actually also decided to watch The Lighthouse yesterday, my impression was also that it was arthouse cinema. After reading it was indeed a horror film, you awoke my interest even more in experiencing this film.

It’s a very well crafted film, full of old Sea lore, bizarre imagery, clear nods to the Greek tale of Prometheus. The relation between sex and violence, it creates a very haunting experience and for a film that’s only 109 I had no sense of time. I often wondered how much time had passed both inside the film and in reality, it felt much longer then my perception of what 109 min film takes.

It’s easily a film I can recommend, but it’s far for everyone. Both characters are wonderfully played by Dafoe and Pattinson.

It’s also shot with old camera lenses and a custom filter that emulates early 1900’s orthochromatic stock. There have gone some great care and thought into the overall look of the experience and it helps sell the vision.

woah there pickle. overrated doesn’t mean anything. well, other than ‘lots of people like thing that i don’t.’

also, it’s freakin’ incredible.

also also, don’t get me started. watchmen is my mastermind specialist subject.

Only if you don’t have very justified reason to actually justify your beliefs otherwise it is “People are overlooking the flaws of this work and only I can see them”.

True I mean overrated doesn’t mean bad to me, it just means that I simply think it has flaws and that not everybody seems to notice them.

I simply think that there have been better deconstructions since it came out and after I reread it I found only one of the arcs to be sympathetic.

But that’s just as entitled sounding!

That is the point it is the Uno Reverse of what you said. But like I said there are legitimate grounds for saying something is overrated most people don’t so they either sound like this guy…

Or they sound like this guy.

Zack Snyder’s Justice League

The theatrical cut of Justice League was a real mess, and after seeing this I understand why.
This is not shot to be a 2 hour movie. Not a chance in hell.

I also saw an interview with Zack Snyder where he said he left the movie, not just because of his daughter’s suicide, but because that made it so that he didn’t have the will power to argue with the studio about the film (about for instance run time).

This is a superior movie, and I really enjoyed watching it. In my opinion, though, it still suffers from Zach Snyder’s “vision” for these characters and the tone of the DC movie universe.
For instance, while I thought the sequence where Aquaman skewers Steppenwolf, and then Superman and Wonder Woman cooperate to decapitate him was pretty damn cool, I don’t think I ever expected (nor wanted) to see these particular characters do it. Doesn’t feel right to me. Likewise with the inclusion of the F-word in this movie. Not necessary, and I would argue it’s out of character (the way I see the character).

Either way, with the exception of a few things like the ones above, almost all changes and additions made are for the better.
Understandably, characters get more time to shine. Cyborg and the Flash get a lot better character development (especially Cyborg).
The threat feels a lot more real, and Steppenwolf is a better character and a better villain (though I could do without all of the moving spikes on his armor).
The inclusion of Darkseid really works.
The music is a lot better, since it feels more consistent wih previous movies and doesn’t go the weird route of using old themes from Batman 1989 and so on. .

etc

The film goes on for about 30 minutes too long though.

this is probably the only thing i’m really interested in. love me some darkseid, though i’m worried snyder - shockingly - misses the point.

gonna have to agree to disagree on that one, my man. i’ve yet to see any legitimate criticism from its use.

like, something being flawed and shit tons of people liking something are mutually exclusive propositions. overrated is effectively dictating what other people should like, and i’ve not been a fan of that kind of mentality since i was a teenager.

happy to discuss it further, but probably needs another thread so we don’t shit this one up

If you want but I mean I am more than happy to agree to disagree. I don’t want to dictate what people find fun though, like I said Watchmen is still really good even if I don’t like it as much as most people and time has taken its toll on it. I still read it three times through and I still have my copy in case I find the time to give it a shot again.

A half year ago I would have said that there is very little chance that we would ever see JL 2 by Snyder. However with the success of Snyder’s version it has breathe new life into this vision for the DCU and I would personally love to see him finish his vision.

Then again I find both Man of Steel, BvS (Director’s cut) and JL (Snyder cut) better then the majority of MCU films, then again there is only a handful I find good.

Not many people agree with me, Winter Solider, Ironman, Infinity War and Endgame are the MCU films I consider above good. The rest well is at best good, that said I do really enjoy the new Spider-man films. The best Marvel films in my humble opinion are not from the MCU, X-men First Class, X-Men Days of Future past and Logan are in my eyes far better films.

Blade II is also an awesome film, but that’s far back in the past. However it’s not like any of these films are what Martin Scorcese would call “Cinema”, they are all spectacle and that’s alright.
