Movies You’ve Only Just Watched

Well, I’ve watched the first 2 F&F movies so far. First one is alright in the end, it is a pretty serious movie I suppose, it does feel like it does try to be a little bit of a drama with Vin Diesel and how far he will go and Paul Walker trying to avoid disaster. I think it’s a decent movie in the end, but it does feel rather short and incomplete, like 20 minutes is missing, and it feels like half the plot threads are just sortof dropped to hurry to the end.

I mean I’ll give it this, I do think that final truck chase is pretty good to watch, there is so many practical stunts and effects, little CGI, you can tell so much of this was done for real. And y’know that final drag race is pretty iconic, I haven’t seen this movie before yet I recognised it, probably from something else.

Don’t think I’ve ever seen Paul Walker in anything else but he’s pretty good and likable in these 2 movies. Vin Diesel is just a man who radiates masculine coolness. I can see why eventually films 4-7 will really excel with their partnership.

So yeah, alright movie. Do find it funny again in hindsight though that Vin Diesel’s crew, who will go on to do insane things in future movies, are all effectively defeated by one truck driver with a shotgun. To be honest, as much as the movie makes out Vin Diesel as this genius for doing the truck heists, they were pretty much doomed to fail. I mean, as soon as the truckers realised they were being targeted, ofcourse they’re going to start arming themselves to defend themselves?

Anyway, alright movie. And honestly, 2 Fast 2 Furious, is pretty alright too, even if it does feel a little bit like a direct to DVD sequel where they could only get 1 actor back. Still, Paul Walker who is teamed up with Tyrese Gibson make a good double act. I know he comes back for Fast Five onwards and I think it’ll be good to see him again, I really liked him in this.

Not much to say about the plot. Blah blah blah Walker and Gibson must work for border patrol to stop evil drug lord to clean their records blah blah blah they basically do so. Very cookie cutter, and also again, feels quite short, very slimmed down movie. I guess if I can give the movie one thing though, it feels like a movie that knows what it is. More cars, more action, more gratutious shots of woman in bikinis. No real pretense of being a drama like the last one, although it does make the movie feel a bit less cool.

The final chase is pretty good with the sheer number of cop cars and I actually do really like Paul Walker’s plan to throw the cops off his tail. Think the opening race is quite weak though, like, ooh, lots of CGI shots of the cars doing basic shit like going around corners, it has not aged very well. And the end credits with the CGI cars looks like an old PS1 game, good grief. Still, not much to say, but it’s a fun time, can’t wait to see Walker, Gibson, and ofcourse Ludacris return later.

I’m 20 minutes into Tokyo Drift. It’s… different, I guess this is basically the Halloween III of the franchise, even if F&F6 will try and put it more squarely into the contintuity of the other movies. See how it goes, but I must admit, I really have a disposition against movies starring high school teens.

F&F 1 had the most believable script. The rest are just trying to out impresses the previous one :joy:.

I’m watching War Dogs right now. I forgot how entertaining it is. Hilarious story about two wild cat guys in way over their head selling guns during the iraq war. Miles Teller and Jonah Hill play the arms dealers. It’s loosely based on a true story but I guess only super loosely so they could make the film better.

It’s worth your time. Oh and Bradley Cooper plays a small part.

Well, I’ve watched Tokyo Drift and F&F4 thus far now. And honestly, I think Tokyo Drift is the strongest so far. I actually wound up really liking this. I sortof said I have a disposition against high school movies, but what I do like is movies set in a foreign location and really just getting immersed in the culture of that place, which is what alot of Tokyo Drift is about.

Sean makes for a good fish out of water character, as he bumbles into Tokyo and trains to become a good drift driver, whilst dealing with drama with a girl, his father, and the Yakuza. I think the car chases are really good, no super obvious CGI, clearly lots of real cars being used in real locales, the film looks great I think. Tokyo really is just one of those cities that looks gorgeous at night with all that neon, and the film really does revel in it.

Not much else to say really. I guess it’s just a shame that this film would wind up being so disconnected from the rest of the franchise as it would go back to Vin Diesel and Paul Walker. Mind you, just having a quick curious Google, apparently Lucas Black as Sean will be back for F9, as well as a couple others from Tokyo Drift, although whether that is just a cameo or something I’m not sure. And I guess it is cool that F&F would keep Tokyo Drift somewhat tied to the franchise in the future rather than just forgetting it, I am imagine partly due to director Justin Lin directing Tokyo Drift, then 4, 5, 6, and returning now for 9.

As for F&F4, I can’t help but compare this film to The Force Awakens: a soft reboot which decides to copy alot of points from the first movie, to get the franchise back on track. And, I think it works, sortof. Rather like TFA, we have what is on paper a good movie, but at the same time, perhaps one that lacks a little heart and is perhaps a bit too much of a retread.

We’re back in LA for this movie, Brian/Paul Walker is now back working for the government, this time as an FBI agent, while Dom/Vin Diesel is in LA despite being a wanted man, as Letty/Michelle Rodriguez has been murdered, and Dom is out for revenge. Kinda sucks Letty is killed off, but then I also know she comes back in future movies, so I’m waiting for the twist where it turns out she isn’t dead, but it never comes. Guess 5 or 6 is when she comes back from the dead.

You’d think whoever killed Letty would be some interesting bad guy, but it turns out to just be some random henchman called Spider, who barely has any personality. For some reason the film also decides to try and have a surprise villian, with the identity of “Braga”, it turns out to be… like his number 2 henchman, and really the only person it could of been, aside from Gal Gadot. Gal Gadot is in this which surprised, I never knew that, shame she does sod all.

I’m not sure what else there is too say. Will Brian side with Dom or the FBI? Dom, duh. Will Dom and Mia forgive Brian for the stuff he did in F&F1? Yeah. Didn’t we do this drug cartel plot in F&F2? Yeah. Speaking of F&F2, it is a bit weird how this movie pretends F&F2 doesn’t exist, with Brian just working for the FBI, and doesn’t mention the fact he had to go on the run for a while to help out Dom. This movie seems to act like he just kept working as a cop and then a fed all this time. Kindof funny since ofcourse this movie sets up the weird timeline with Hans at the beginning, who goes off to Tokyo after the opening chase.

I also find it funny how this movie, despite being such a direct sequel to the first film, kindof ignores the fact that Dom in the first movie had 5 people on his crew, whereas this movie it seems only Mia and Letty exist. I guess Dom and Mia at least don’t blame Brian for Jesse’s death since that never comes up. And we never find out what happened to Leon or Vince, especially since Brian saved Vince’s life in the first film, got him a hospital helicopter, and I would assume must of been captured by the police afterwards.

I’m looking forward to Fast Five since it does seem like aton of side characters from these 4 movies are going to come together in that movie, and that should be fun, including Vince from F&F1, although I guess Leon just gets a cameo apparently and that’s him out of the franchise.

So yeah, F&F4, it’s alright. Kindof forgettable as its own title. I guess a fun revisit to the original movie, but since we have 3 more movies with Diesel and Walker left, not to mention the original itself, it does feel a bit pointless know I suppose. I think I’ll only really remember the opening tanker chase, don’t think the rest of the car stuff ever lives up to the opening.

I guess finally, there is also Los Bandoleros, an under 20 minute short film written and directed by Vin Diesel. I have no idea why this exists, apparently this came out 4 months after F&F4 despite being set as a prequel, explaining the opening tanker chase in the Dominican Republic. Lots of talking and site seeing of a beautiful Dominican town and beach, Dom having some alone time with Letty, some dialogue scenes. Very slice of life. Don’t really see why this exists, wonder if this was just an excuse for Vin Diesel to be able to make his only little movie, but it is a nice slice of life short.

Anyway, I’m a bit excited to move onto Fast Five, as it seems like this is when the modern era for the franchise kicks into gear.

MORTAL KOMBAT!!!

Going straight into spoilers. Short answer: Falls short but worth watching at least once. 6 out of 10.

So the plot takes place before the first tournament. Shang Tsung is trying to kill off all the chosen before it starts. You would think this is against the rules but since when have the Elder Gods ever given a fuck? Raiden himself isn’t too terrible active in trying to stop it either. So the chosen are people born with the MK dragon mark or have killed someone who has it, in which case it gets transferred over to them. And the mark basically means you have some hidden power to unlock.

Enter Cole Young, the main lead who sadly is not Johnny Cage. He’s a decent character but I’ve would’ve gladly traded him for someone else in the MK cast. The fact that he’s the lead just hurts the movie. Legendary badass Goro is killed by this dude. :expressionless: Enough about lame ass Cole, let’s dig into the rest of the cast. Sub-Zero is pretty much the main antagonist and final boss of the movie and he’s fucking awesome. :+1: Scorpion has some good fights scenes but he’s only in the movie for about twenty minutes. :-1:

Best performance goes to Kano. He is true to character and pretty fucking funny. :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes: Next in line are Kabal, Kung Lao, Jax and Liu Kang in that order :+1:. Shang Tsung is solid but it’s impossible to top the original actor. Raiden seems more harden but I can’t help but think a lot of shit could’ve been avoided if he stepped up. Even Shang Tsung got no problem trying him( Not in a fight). Sadly both Sonya Blade and Mileena kind of fall flat in my opinion. There’s also Reiko but he doesn’t do much. But as I said, the movie is worth at least one look through. Hopefully they can improve in the sequel.

So today I watched the Sonic the Hedgehog movie out of curiosity.

It’s entertaining enough.

Pretty standard E.T.-type plot (alien being travels to earth, must get back home while avoiding government authority intent on capturing him – also makes friends along the way) and the humour was pretty basic, but it still was fun to watch. – This film is definitely aimed at a young child audience though.

  • Ben Schwartz does a good job as Sonic. I’m not familiar with his normal voice actor, but Ben pulls off his own take pretty well, as a wide-eyed, young blue hedgehog fascinated with Earthly things.
  • James Marsden is Sonic’s tag-along for the adventure, Tom. A guy who just wanted to live his peaceful life and move to San Fransisco, only to be upended by a humanoid hedgehog being chased by a maniacal evil scientist.
  • Jim Carrey plays that evil scientist, Dr. Robotnik/Eggman. A big return for the actor who hasn’t been in many projects since 2016. …And he hams it up in the best ways possible! With a character as ridiculous as Robotnik, with plenty of gadgets and drones for practically any occasion, he plays the wild, crazy, superiority-complex-riddled personality well. I don’t think that’s how it usually goes in the games, but it’s a unique take nonetheless. He gives off an old 90s villain flair.

I don’t really have much to say about this film other than, if you’re interested in it, doesn’t hurt to try watching it. Nice way to spend 90 minutes.
While I feel like the ET-plot was way too safe of a plot to take this film, can’t say it doesn’t work. (But man, that 5-minute green hills zone opening was so intriguing!)

Spoiler territory: I found it odd how they decided to use the 'oh no Sonic was hit by “X”! He’s not moving! He must be dead!" trope twice in this film.

For sequel-teasing post-credits scenes, I’m pretty interested in the sequel. We’ve got Tails joining the fray, (voiced by Colleen O’Shaughnessey, his video-game VA, I wonder why they didn’t feel the need to recast her?), there’s Eggman plotting some new scheme, rocking the big poofy mustache, and it sounds like Carrey leaned into the similar kind of voice that you’d hear from the games. If he can replicate that for the sequel, that’d be neat.

bit of a sidenote: I’m glad the film ended with Tom not choosing to move to SF and be a big-city cop. Main reason I can think of that makes that a bit off-putting is that being a cop (especially in major cities recently) isn’t considered “cool” anymore. They dodged a bullet on that one. Small-town, helpful guy is cool enough.

EDIT: Oh yeah and Sonic’s design is pretty cute. I’m so glad they decided to change it from what was originally teased. Yeesh, I’m getting shivers thinking about it.

Tails in the post-credit scene is also equally adorable. Ohhh so fluffy.

I think Sonic was one of the last movies I saw in a theatre. (All around me are familiar faces…)

But it was just such a nice movie. Sonic’s loneliness was completely understandable and James Marsden did a great job of selling that he was actually interacting with him. I grew up on Ace Venture and the Mask so it was great to see Jim Carey go back to his zany roots.

oh no, is he peddling anti-vax stuff again?!

i’m kidding!

i quite like his drama stuff though: truman show, man on the moon, but especially eternal sunshine of the spotless mind. he nailed that.

i love a good comic actor that can turn in a more ‘real’ or understated performance. peter sellers and robin williams spring to mind.

I want to watch his recent tv series ‘Kidding’ soon. I’ve heard it was pretty good, but unfortunately the network hosting it pulled the plug last year.

And what’s that about anti-vaxxing? Oh no! I thought he was a major activist against republican policies and propaganda (often communicated through art in the past few years), but anti-science stuff too? :grimacing:

The current Sonic cast is in the middle of being entirely recast right now, the only exception being Mike Pollock as Dr Eggman whose managed to stay in the role since around 2003/4 I think. Colleen probably only got to have a role in the movie since the sequel will probably cast big name actors for Tails and Knuckles.

It’s believed the reason for the big recast is for the upcoming Sonic Prime Netflix TV show. This actually happened way back when the Sonic X TV show happened. Sega just kindof treats the English cast pretty badly really, being anti-union, and seemingly recasting for no major reason. (Mike Pollock seems to survive this because he has to reaudition, they can’t find anyone better, and I guess he’s just OK with the pay and working conditions.)

Sonic himself has had 4 major voice actors before Schwartz. Before the video games, Jaleel White, aka Steven Urkel from Family Matters voiced Sonic in Satam, Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog, and Sonic Underground TV shows. Ryan Drummond voiced Sonic from Sonic Adventure til Sonic Heroes. Jason Griffith voice Sonic from Sonic X til about Sonic Unleashed. And finally, we’ve had Roger Craig Smith voicing Sonic from Free Riders and Colours until leaving/being let go just now.

Ofcourse the rumour is whether or not Ben Schwartz will just become Sonic’s VA for the whole franchise rather than film only, since Schwartz does do VA work like Duck Tales, and has been pretty positive about voicing Sonic. Guess we’ll see but personally I doubt that will happen.

I still haven’t watched the Sonic movie. Really should since I think it is available on Amazon Prime. There’s a few details about the sequel we know about and it sounds like the sequel is going to a bit more game friendly potentially.

That’s where I watched it, so, that’s probably where you’ll find it in your region.

That’s really unfortunate that the cast changes so much.

Sequel set spoilers:

There’s some Langley set photos that leaked recently. Mannequins of Sonic, Tails and Knuckles were seen there.

Yeah, the cast changing really does suck. The Sonic fandom has alot of strong opinions about this kindof thing, and it sortof ties-in to this feeling right now that Sega has no idea what direction the franchise should be going in. Least the movie people seem to know what they are doing.

Sequel set easter eggs:

The coffee shop is called “The Mean Bean Coffee House”, referencing Dr Robotnik’s Mean Bean Machine for the Game Gear and Mega Drive. The military helicopter has “SA-2” written on it, referencing Sonic Adventure 2. The military are called GUN, an organisation that hunts Sonic in SA2, Shadow fights in his game, and Shadow and Rouge wind up working for in Sonic '06. Some deeper lore cuts right there.

Yeah Carrey has a bit of a crazy streak that runs deeper than eccentric. I haven’t thought about his anti-vaxxer stuff in ages.

i think he’s past that these days; jenny mccarthy and him seemed to amplify each other’s worst aspects. still, he’s crazier than a spam spanner.

I’m rewatching Big Trouble in little China right at the Moment, what a great Movie.

Miss Sloane. Jessica Chastain plays the same highly intelligent but morally compromised character she usually plays. Man is she good at it too! This time shes a larger than life lobbyist. Mark Strong and John Lithgow are both in the film as well. I love Mark Strong. The entire film will remind you that when huge piles of money and power are on the line, no one can be expected to play by the rules.

Worth your time.

Promising Young Woman.

Whoa.

The movie’s about a woman in her late 20s who, after dropping out of med school due to a sudden tragic event, secretly goes out to bars late at night and takes revenge on men who attempt to assault her.

  • It’s an interesting mix of thriller, drama, and a dab of romantic comedy at times. But first and foremost, it deals with some pretty unsettling and dark subject matter. Be warned.

  • Carey Mulligan gives a stunning performance as Cassie, who is extremely driven, smart, and a bit vigilante in nature.
When she leans into the calculated revenge side of herself, it’s extremely captivating and kinda unsettling with what lengths she’s willing to go to get the upper hand on someone. It’s a movie where you can root for the main character, yet want her to stop – as the price of what she’s putting herself through to get what she wants might be too much.

  • Bo Burnham plays the a-dorkable, awkward, yet a bit clingy acquaintance who Cassie reconnects with over the course of the film.
He lends some great comedy chops to this film, but has some great depth to his character, as you’re unsure of whether his intentions are true or not, tying into the great psychological thriller aspect of this movie.

  • The soundtrack is so good.
There’s a lot of underground pop music here, some old-timey musical tracks, and a great violin cover of the iconic Toxic by Britney Spears.

  • Such a good Best Picture nominee. Watch this film. Here’s a trailer, but honestly it’s way better going in blind, not expecting where the story might go or who you’ll encounter. From the climax until the end of the film, it’s a non-stop jaw-dropping sequence of events.

Ah, god, and the cinematography and set design is so nice. There’s such a nice contrast of light, bubbly blues and pinks, and dark, smeared colours of the shady nightlife.
Such good framing in this film too. Wow.

guess the movie:

an isolated community that reveres a giant eagle and fairly conservative social values has a shock when ostensibly friendly overseas immigrants decide to visit and live with them. the ‘hero’ is suspicious of the immigrants and their traditions, believing their intentions to be nefarious and that they’re hiding their true numbers, but the rest of the community welcomes them with open arms in spite of that.

turns out that the ‘hero’ was right to be suspicious of immigrants: they blow up the community’s buildings and steal their children, returning to their own home to eat them.

the ‘hero’ reawakens the giant eagle, who had until recently given into decadence and arrogance, and rallies the community to launch an attack on the immigrants, destroying their homes in return and saving the children.

any ideas?

that’s right: it’s fucking angry birds the movie.

not sure how i feel about that. no, wait, i do know; that’s a terrible damn message for kids to soak up.
