Movies You’ve Only Just Watched

Can you believe the guy that wrote it worked on The Simpsons, The Critic (bring it back and buy my book!), King of the Hill and The Office? I wonder if there is a correlation between his writing and the decline of those shows…

One of the directors was head of animation at Disney since the late 90s and the other one worked on The Iron Giant.

Well, you never know what happens behind the scenes. Maybe they were pressured to release the movie in a short time span, maybe they decided to scrap the story and rewrite it late into production, or maybe they’re very burnt out on working on a project called “The angry birds movie”.

Well, at least the sequel was better than the original, right?

(I found out that the director of the sequel is Thurop Van Orman, the man behind (some of) my childhood memories.

I have had artistic burnout and not once have I inserted jingoistic and nativist overtones into my works. But you know who you should feel bad for? The people who worked on the sequel.

i didn’t! that’s interesting.

i was a bit taken aback with how on the nose it was. i love a lot of films that i don’t agree with the values of - dark knight, dirty harry, etc. - but my kids aren’t at the stage where i can explain that.

compare and contrast to the addam’s family movie which we watched straight after; for all the horror aesthetics and dark undertones, that film has a big, warm, wet (and still beating) heart.

Yeah I looked the team up trying to see why it turned out like that. Nothing really off about them so either it was a producer or it was a bunch of extremely unfortunate cliches strung together.

i dunno.

i got burnt out writing my dissertation on japanese noise music at university, but i managed to avoid it becoming ‘rivers of blood 2.0’. maybe i got lucky. :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

that’s good calibre!

agreed. i don’t think it’s intentional, just an unfortunate by-product of getting all the game elements into the story.

Watched the Kenneth Branagh version of Murder on the Orient Express. Really enjoyed it, thought it was stylish and fun, and so many great actors in it. Really want to see his version of Death on the Nile, but that won’t come out til February 2022.

Anything with Penelope Cruz is golden in my book!!

Just watched Knives Out. Enjoyed it, thought it was pretty good. I was slightly nervous I wouldn’t because I really didn’t like Rian Johnson’s The Last Jedi, but this was good, and this was actually funny. I still remember the awkwardness of the “funny” moments from The Last Jedi. I don’t think the film is perfect, feel like there is at least 5-10 minutes in the middle of flab that should of been cut. But still, it is a great movie.

I am very interested to see the two sequels Netflix has bought for this film, with the sequel apparently meant to start filming very soon in Greece. Daniel Craig as Blanc is very good, and honestly, I kindof want to delve more into his character and his backstory. I mean, spoilers but:

I’d argue Knives Out main character is Marta, the nurse. Craig feels more like a part of the ensemble than it being “his” movie, unlike say Kenneth Branagh’s Poirot in Murder of the Orient Express. So I would assume the sequels would see Craig take more of a central stage, and hopefully in the process, see the Blanc character become more of an iconic detective.

I watched Okja. The mind is blown and the heart is broken. What a brilliant movie. Glad I saw this before getting the idea of watching this with my godson. This movie is not as kid-friendly as it starts out to be.

The Mitchells vs. The Machines. Very good movie, better than I expected, lots of heart-tugging moments, though I’ve got a few issues with it.

  • It’s a genuinely laugh-out-loud film. Tons of fun punchlines and sight gags.
  • There’s this really fun blend of the 3D CGI of the film and this 2D “Katie-Vision” effect throughout the film. Fun, joyful moments are complemented with sketched-out rainbow trails and sparkles. Sad moments with sad dog faces, broken hearts and storm clouds. It’s pretty darn unique and adds lots of charm to the movie. Reminds me of similar things in The Lego Movie or Spider-Verse. (Kinda a Lord/Miller style by this point. That, and jump cuts that mess with the aspect ratio.)
  • The film is really good-looking. The style and design of the characters is so cool and malleable. They can be very expressive.
  • A friend of mine is right when he reccommended this to me: There’s a legendary moment where Maya Rudolph kills it as Linda. Pure passionate performance.
  • Olivia Coleman has a great villain voice. She needs to do that more often (or I need to see more of her villainous roles)

In terms of the bad in this film, I’ve only got three points, they’re relatively small, don’t detract from the enjoyment too much:

  • The movie is a bit long. About 1h50m for the runtime. The plot jumps around to lots of locations and scenes. I feel like it should have been shorter. It was a lot to digest and long to get to important climactic moments.
  • The writing could be improved. Some of the cutaway jokes fell flat for me. The film has a few cliche dialogue moments and emotional blows that were pretty telegraphed. It’s fine to use them, but, it took me out of it when it happened. (the “two characters fighting over a precious, fragile item” near the beginning felt a bit cheap to get to that moment)
  • Now that I’ve learned that it’s his film, I forgive him somewhat, but having Michael Rianda play Aaron was a strange choice, voice-wise. At worst, he either sounds like a middle-aged man playing a child (which he is) or at best a teenager stuck in an 8-year old’s body. It’s very hard for me to buy into the character’s believability when he doesn’t sound like a child. Again, I get that this is his story about family road trips and relationships, but I did not like that casting choice or his take on it.

Oh yeah and Sony brought back the robotic demons of 1998 and it was hilarious and perfectly creepy.

Furby subtitles was the weirdest and unexpectedly funny thing about this movie for me.

I got used to it easily after a few minutes. Just try not to think about it too much.

Also isn’t he supposed to be the dog in the real family? (from the credits)

Yeah, that’s probably the problem. I couldn’t stop thinking about it!

Also isn’t he supposed to be the dog in the real family? (from the credits)

Huh? Mike Rianda is the director and he plays the kid Aaron in the movie.
The dog is “voiced by” Doug the Pug in the credits, who actually is a celebrity social media pug. Pretty crazy, silly casting there.

i didn’t cry six separate times watching it and i’m not choking up thinking about it right now, so shut up.

I nearly cried 3 times in this film, but I pulled through, so I feel your pain.

This movie’s got a lot of heart, oh my gosh.
So far though, it’s the best animated movie of 2021 (it’s the only animated film of this year I’ve seen, but it’s definitely gonna be in my top 5 once I get to more).

ahem

it’s a sweet film. kinda wish there was more of the stupid robot duo, but all in all any complaints i have are really minor.

I meant when they had his real family photo in the credits he replaced Monchi from the Mitchell family photo.

Eric and Deborahbot is the pinnacle of comedy.

I saw The Mitchells vs. the Machines recently. The animation’s really well done. Similar to Spiderverse. The main character annoyed me a lot, but I get that it was sort of her thing to be that “extra”. It’s just that I’ve known so many people like that in art school and they’re insufferable to know, personally. :grimacing: Aside from that, the humor and memes that were thrown in were just right. The writing didn’t feel bare anywhere. Loved the two robots they adopted too. Trying not to spoil it too badly. Makes a nice Friday night movie  :movie_camera::robot:
Edit: I only saw Chicken’s post about this movie now. Okay his review is better lol

Lol I’m pretty sure that was a human infant in that credits picture.

it was the dog when it was a picture of the mitchell’s, then it changed into a real family photo. the dog was replaced by a baby.

my kids have made me watch this film about 12-15 times. i’m literally watching it for the second time today. call the police.

what does “extra” mean? i’m an old man.
