(Spoilers) 007 First Light Discussion Thread

It’s visible now. It’s visible in every image of Bond I’ve seen for this game. It was included at all. That’s the point. If this is true, then yay for the sequels, but for this one, it’s literally the one scar on what has otherwise so far been a quite enjoyable experience.

It was suggested that this be here:

So, some of my challenges aren’t firing when I complete them. Anyone else experiencing this?

Finished the game today. The title of the thread already says “spoilers” so I’m not blurring anything, be warned.

Great game, felt like playing through a Bond movie, although I also have some issues.

Starting with gameplay. The game controls great. Combat is really good, I specially like the ways you can interact with the environment, it encourages you to improvise. Gunplay is servicible I guess, it doesn’t stand out but it’s not bad either; I like that you can shoot the gun out of enemies, I wonder if “no kill” runs are posible? Mixing in gadgets improves gunfights considerably, specially the pen, I had so much fun with that.

I like that there are no ratings, it takes a huge load away and lets you improvise, which is more fun and Bond-like.

My main issue with the gameplay is how hand-holdy it gets on the open ended environments. I understand having a pointer on the linear sections, but I absolutely hated having it during the open sections, I don’t want or need it on my screen telling where to go all the time when I just want to explore and find the oportunities by myself. There should be a way to turn off the tracker of the “mission stories”. The game overall lacks a lot of the customizability that Hitman has.

The story was a hit overall, but it also has some misses. It’s strongest point are the characters, I think most of them are really well written and acted, even when you know they are going to die you still feel bad for them. I also really liked the villian’s whole scheme regarding the cover up of THEIA’s mistakes, It’s a very Fleming-esque plot, but combined with modern elements from the movies.

My downsides with the story are, first, how predictable it could get at some points. As I said above, knowing who was going to die was very easy, as were other moments of the story. Second, the villians, they are such an important element in any James Bond story, but the ones from this game are really underwhelming. Nicholas is bland and is dispatched in a lame anticlimactic way; and Damien is just your average crazy psycopath, I never got the sense of rivalry between he and Bond that the game tried to convey, it felt too forced.

Also, this is a nitpick, but I don’t like that we don’t get a confirmation on whether Moneypenny survived or not. I assume she did because they wouldn’t kill a major character off-screen like that, but still is annoying that we don’t get an answer.

Still, It was amazing game. I won’t be coming back to it like I do with Hitman, but I don’t think that was the intention either. Hopefully TacSim gets some substantial support in the future to justify the quadrillion suits already in the game.

As a Bond fan, I’m very happy and can’t wait for the next game, which seems to be featuring SPECTRE. Hopefully we can finally see Blofeld done right.

Main thing I noticed so far (and I haven’t replayed much looking to complete challenges yet) is the Tac Sim escalation challenge for ‘only use three chemical gadgets, no battery gadgets’ to complete a mission. Wouldn’t unlock for me.

Totally agree on both these points. They’ve done a fantastic job overall with characterisation, with the exception being the bad guys who just felt a little on the underbaked side. I can see where they were going with Nicholas Webb - respectable, establishment figure who’s close to the corridors of power. You could easily see him as a WoA target. Whereas, for Bond, I’d want a little something extra when he’s revealed as the villain. A bit more overt evil.

Oh yeah - what the heck! I forgot we never heard from her again before the end credits! As you say, she’s almost certainly returning for the potential sequel.

Challenges seem to be a bit funky at times. I found that completely closing the game and then going back in and doing the exact same thing would then cause them to trigger.

Finished it a couple of days ago.
I really like the story and the vibes in the game. It really sucks you in!
I love the bluff part too and the way its implemented.

I wish 47 could speak his way out of certain situations but I dont want a copy paste mechanic in Hitman.
I do however wish the “sabotage” (door) option became a part of Hitman! That would add some pretty neat ways to dispose of non targets!

Anyway, I found the game very well made and enjoyed every second of it.
Been grinding the challenges which also feels very hitman-like. And I hope a lot of stuff gets added to the TacSim, because at the moment its mostly just fighting.

The game itself I give 9.5.
But the replay value only a 6.
Looks like Hitman will remain my comfort game still.

Looks like people have realised the rarity of the Coca-Cola skins (as well as the others) and are selling their codes on eBay. One auction for the Coca-Cola skins is up to £60 already and still has a few days to go.

I hope IO releases these in other ways soon so they destroy this market - as these are just going to hike up in price as time goes on as the number of unredeemed codes reduces.

The Absolution comparisons don’t really make sense on a deeper level. Yes, the environments are made of linear sections and small sandboxes in both games, but making your way through is actually fun in First Light.

In Absolution, even if the general art direction was cool at times, the broken disguise system meant that you really only moved through these environments by awkwardly hiding behind covers. Gunplay wasn’t great either. It made the basic gameplay loop frustrating.

With First Light there is 1000 options for engaging gameplay. Sneaking, gadgets, hand-to-hand, firefights, bluffs, environmental distractions etc.

Needless to say, First Light has been a great ride so far. I’m really impressed.

People could destroy it themselves by picking the correct option of not giving a fuck, especially when they were shown early and up-front by IOI - well before the game actually released - that acquiring every last cosmetic would be unconscionably difficult, if not impossible.

The old adage about people also applies to gamers: a person is smart, people are stupid.

This is true. But there is a small part of me that is enjoying the situation - since IO’s extensive use of FOMO is causing people that are so desperate to have everything, they’re getting them through other means that means when the eventually DLC packs go on sale - there is less money for them to make because some people that would’ve bought it without hesitation will already have it.

Also, sounds like First Light may be the last IOI Bond game.

While IO Interactive self-published that game, the head of Amazon Games says that won’t be the case going forward. In an interview with Polygon, Jeff Gattis, GM of gaming at Amazon, says that while the tech giant “didn’t have the full rights to this First Light James Bond game,” sequels will be “done by MGM and, theoretically, by Amazon Game Studios.”

Yay! Had a genuinely great time with 007FL, but due to its inherent lack of replayability (for me, at least), I’d much prefer IOI’s main focus to return to Hitman, even if that comes at the cost of a less capable studio going forward with future Bond games.

Or, given the success of this game, IOI might be in a position to renegotiate their involvement in potential sequels. They’re now going to have succeeded in not just being known as the company that makes Hitman, so that gives them some edge.

Will be interesting to see if they just mean IOI wouldn’t self-publish the next game, or if they won’t be involved at all.

Yeah, you make a fair point, they’ll have the leverage to make the scar even MORE pronounced… :face_blowing_a_kiss:

More so IOI developed and then published by Amazon. I don’t see a world where a First Light sequel happens by someone else that isn’t IOI.

the biggest hurdle for First Lights future is just how to pump out a game faster since First Light took seven years of development with a 200 Million Budget if I’m correct.

other than that Bonds future in video games is heavily dependent on what comes next. If they don’t pursue First Lights sequel without IO the game and by extension Bonds space in the gaming industry is dead in the water.

in other words Amazon may front the Bill but IOI bring the talent.

I assume any IOI sequels wouldn’t take anywhere near as long, since they can build off of what they’ve got from First Light. They just have to build new maps/cutscenes, throw in some new features and push it out.

Just like how H2 and H3 took way less time than H1 to make because they already had the groundwork there.
