šŸ”’ The Escape Room! forum game

So here is an idea I had for a forum game…

The person making the room will be the ā€˜Room Master’

The Room Master will need to make a list of things that are initially visible in the room.

Players can reply asking to look closer at or perform some type of action on any single item from the list of items that will be found in the escape room.

When things are revealed, that should be noted by other players in that they may ask or say what they can/will do with said newly found items.

Anyone playing or replying will be in the room and helping (whoever) to escape or find a way out.

When players ask to look closer at, or perform whichever action on said things/items, the Room Master will reply with what that resulted in, or will verify that the answer to the question the item presents is correct. Like if clues point towards a series of numbers, the RM can verify if they’re relevant or not, or specify that those numbers are used somewhere with something else when asked.

Players may discuss amongst themselves what to do with any clues found. Or make note of any sequence of numbers or items they come across to use on anything later. Such as if you find what could be a combination, but no locks have been found yet. Or a key, but not the lock it goes to… (again) yet.

To make a room: I advise sketching it out on paper or in an art program. Make it like a tournament bracket. Have the door at the right, have that split to the left to 2 items, have those split to 2 or however many items and how they’re obtained, etc. Up until you have your list of items that can be seen in the room.

I’d also suggest going into your Profile, do like you’d do if you were going to send a message, but make it to yourself. Using the room item list you made from paper or art program, list items found from other items

A Fridge

You’ll copy the ā€˜Fridge’ item into your ā€˜Escpae Room’ post, but refer to the self sent PM as to what’s inside the fridge once a player asks to look inside the fridge.

  • inside the fridge you find a carrot

Items of importance can be underlined. Try to use an emoji if one exists for the item you’re wanting to use for a clue or prop.

:jack_o_lantern:

Player: Can I look inside the pumping?

RM: You found a

:candle:

So then a candle would come into play as part of solving the escape room.

Once you have every aspect of the escape room worked out – then copy everything from that 1st Self PM post, paste it as a reply to the same Self PM, but delete all subsequent items/props/clues since those will be revealed later after successful player guesses and/or requests for actions.

At some point, the RM may have to give hints if players are way off, or missing something that players might not have looked closely enough at. :man_shrugging:

At this point, I can’t think of anything else. The rules might need to be worked on or refined. I apologize if anything is unclear or hard to understand.

So lets see how this goes, and I hope everyone has fun!

In the room, you see the following items…

:door:
This is the door to open to escape

:bed:
A bed is in the corner of the room, it has a wooden safety railing on the side

An electrical outlet, a small fridge is plugged into it.

:spiral_calendar:

A calendar is hanging on the wall

A large metal cabinet safe with a PIN pad

A small fridge with a combination lock

:purse:
A small purse

:moai:
A small statue/bust on a shelf that is too high to reach.

A coffee maker but the glass caraffe/pitcher is missing.

Edit to fix one small thing.

To start it off, the first ā€˜player’ to reply might ask about or ask to look closer at one of the items/props.

Quote the item and emoji (if there is one)

Player: May I look at, in, under, etc. the ______ ?

This sounds complex. I’d not only draw the room as a room master but if I were playing I’d have a sketch too so I could keep track of things. It’s a fun idea, but is dependant on a dedicated room master, ideally one who is clever enough to create a decent puzzle out of the items they put in the room.

And who can monitor the game regularly and be able to respond timely.

No Tommy Wiseau in the room? I want my money back.

Well, I’ve been watching this topic since I’ve made it and still no starts to the game. I’ll be going to sleep in about… 4 to 5 hours. It could go either very slow or really quick.

Since this hasn’t been done before (that I know of) it will likely be a learning experience.

As for who would go next, or who would win since this topic will be a group effort? That I’m not sure on. Someone might have to be sure they have something worked out and then volunteer.

I suppose I could rate the difficulty of my Room at 2.5 out of 5 stars.

Oh, I know you’d be prepared for it as the game’s originator. I’m just putting it out there in word what responsibilities a room master would have for those who may want to try, and raising the possibility of long waits for responses to potential players.

The statue was too heavy/wasn’t light enough to be affected by the thrown purse. But the purse did seem to contain one or more things…

Floople's questions regarding the game

I would rather one player perform an action or ask to look closer at one item at a time… Once a day. That won’t stop another player from asking about whichever item that has already been examined or tampered with by someone else. So their actions should be considered carefully (i.e., read others’ posts)… Unless they edit before I answer.

Edit: Players can discuss what is found and how it might be used…

Hmm… I don’t think so. It’d probably just be easier to say, ā€œThat didn’t work.ā€

That is, unless someone else posts asking to look at… or in… it.

I’m aware that some games will/can be super technical. Like if someone looks inside a box

ā€œYou’ve found a thermometer.ā€

I’ll consider the thermometer removed, and not be like…

ā€œYou need to remove the item from the box before doing anything with it.ā€

Because I’ve always found that to be annoying.

I want to look under the bed.

Underneath the Bed, you find a toolbox with a padlock on it (requiring a :key: ).

It is a 4 digit combination lock with rotating dials.

You could try to brute force it… Or you or another player could find something to help open it way faster. You did come close with a previous try.

That’s a shame you forgot to keep your promise.

Why bother with a list when you can solve it with a clue?

Can I kick the door down?

:face_with_bags_under_eyes:

Well, what do you think?

I mean, will you be able to? It’s extremely unlikely.
Can you still try that as an action? I suppose. If, by this action, you’re having fun with the ā€œroomā€, there’s nothing saying I can’t have fun with you. :smiling_face_with_horns:

:brain: :shooting_star:

thefixer47: I kick the door!

thefixer47 starts his run up from the other side of the small room. At a full sprint he leaps with his best foot forward, like a knight jousting another (actually) armored knight. With a shower of splinters the door shatters into a million toothpicks perfect for those tasty little smoked weenies marinated in a delicious sauce of mysterious origin. As the room floods with a blinding light, he finds that he’s out! He’s made it. He actually esca…

What actually happened

He then wakes up from the bed, groaning in excruciating pain. It was all a dream! In his feeble attempt to cheat he shattered his ankle then fell to the floor, knocking himself out cold. The Room Master placed him there to recover, making sure to put up the wooden guard rail so he doesn’t fall out and get another boo-boo.

Apparently, the door is protected by impervious plot armor. :man_shrugging:

^That’s what could happen. Are you sure you don’t want to try some other action that’s in the spirit of actually solving the escape room? :face_with_raised_eyebrow:

TL:DR You can’t do that. :joy: Whenever you get back and read this, you can try something else since I won’t count this as a legitimate action. You did only ASK if you could do it.

See this post for most recent status…

I’m going to add an important item that should help with the vibe of the escape room. ā€œQuotedā€ for emphasis.

:framed_picture:

There’s a picture on the wall of an old man dressed in camo and orange hunting cap, he appears to be in a forest, holding a rifle in one hand and a green mug in the other, while crouched down next to a bluetick coonhound.

Since I’m adding it this late, I’ll say it’s not of any significance other than to give a reference to a few things in the room. It ultimately will not help in solving the room or affecting anything.

But, man! that would’ve been great fodder for a clue to solve something else.

I’d like to open the purse, if I’m still alive.

Thank You!

A small purse

Inside you find…

  • 3 coins: 2x Dimes (2x .10Ā¢) and 1x Penny (.01Ā¢)
  • A small comb with 25 teeth, but some are broken
Examining the comb closer...

You see that the 10th, 12th, 16th, and 25th teeth are broken.

Congratulations!.. The lock is still locked.

If only there were some ridiculously obvious clue as to what the combination could be.

Wow. This is a real… head scratcher.
