Goosebumps Episodes 1-5
Firstly, I think it’s important to say that this show isn’t gonna be for everyone especially if you have a specific expectation for a show revolving around an Anthology Based Book Series for Elementary School Kids.
What I can say is this show isn’t for that demographic, Goosebumps is a Young Adult Television Show with genuine moments of horror, violence, language, and suggestive themes. It revolves around a tragedy in the 90’s that leads to a later conspiracy in 2023.
Every episode has an mcguffin that leads to various spooky things happening within a small town where the core cast try to uncover what’s going on.
So far the show is a decent watch, it’s enjoyable at best but nothing to rave about too. The worst part of the show is simply the characters, but that’s cause the show flips between them constantly so the time we spend with them alone is very sparse. This leads to characters with limited personality and it’s essentially this.
The Varsity Athlete whose parents are depending on his future.
The Gay Best-friend who has a neglectful alcoholic mother.
The Outcast with an absent father and overbearing mother.
The Brains whose parents have a rocky marriage.
The Reckless Teen who lives with their single mother.
I think of the things that hammered that this show is targeted for an older audience is just the themes/imagery they have in the show.
- Murder
- Adultery
- Blood/Gore
- Suggestive Language
- Mental illness/Suicide
There was an instance where a character said fuck which caught me off guard at one point since cursing has been tame and boils down to stuff like Son-of-a-bitch.
Justin Longs performance is arguably the highlight of the show since he essentially plays two characters. Unfortunately you don’t spend a lot of time with his “first character” because plot reasons. Another downside is his performance is spread thin across the series so far so you don’t spend a whole lot of time with the character until the plot needs him to appear.
One big gripe I have with the show is simply the release decisions where they had a five episode premiere. It makes me question why they didn’t just release the entire season at once, but now we gotta wait five Fridays to see the final five episodes of Season one. I understand two episode premieres or spreading seasons across two parts. But dropping half a season at once and then drip feeding it across five weeks is different.
So in conclusion the show is a 7/10 at best.
