Is it now an unpopular opinion to say that I love Blood Money? Well, anyway, I guess if we’re talking games:
Codename 47: I don’t hate this game but I don’t really see much need to ever replay it. I’ll give C47 this: it’s never boring, it feels like it is brimming with ideas from the devs, and there is so much charm packed into its levels. I just don’t think C47 really knows what kind of game it wants to be, action or stealth.
Silent Assassin: Some great highs but I think the lows are so low that I don’t think you could ever say SA is the best Hitman game. Not even Absolution has anything as utterly horrendous as Hidden Valley, I think it is objectively the worst level ever put into a Hitman game. But still, there are impressive levels, St Petersburg, the first skyscraper level, one of the India levels, I think, Invitation to a Party. Hitman’s identity is slowly emerging here.
Contracts: I think this game mostly holds up. Granted, as much so many fans seem to love the very dark atmosphere I think it does get a bit too edgelordy for me at times. The Meat King’s Party does go from dark to just being overly absurd for me in its edginess. Still, some good levels here, but it does feel let down a little by the remake portion. I think they should of been more willing to take liberties with the remake levels. I think combining the 2 Dutch levels from C47 into a single level worked really well, but I think the decision to try and make the 4 Hong Kong missions was misguided, they all feel outdated by Contract’s mechanics.
Blood Money: Not sure what to say. OK, yeah, the tutorial mission is rubbish, the epilogue mission is confusing when trying to wake 47. The White House mission isn’t great, and the Vegas casino has aged badly due to just how much waiting you’re forced to do in it. But otherwise, when BM is on fire, it is on fire. The Vineyard, the health clinic, the Christmas party, the boat, the wedding are just great levels that are so much fun to wander around and explore. It is clunky though and I would love some kind of remaster that helps fix the clunkiness.
Absolution: Not that bad. Alright, it’s not a good Hitman game, but I don’t hate it. Probably would be more bearable is the plot wasn’t so stupid and kept ripping off Pulp Fiction. Arguably Absolution is more close to being like The Last of Us, or other vague “action adventure” linear games where plot is the main focus and trying to give the players an “experience”. But yeah, Absolution, not that great, doesn’t really have much replayability. Don’t think it is a terrible game.
