I feel for you. Did the same thing on my first playthrough. I always keep telling myself to try a sloppy playthrough where I intentionally miss clues and select the wrong responses, just to experience all the alternative dialogue and what can happen, but it´s so hard to resist
She actually appears in the intro cinematic as well. While I do agree it´s not set up particularly well, I honestly also don´t mind. I want to roam 1940´s L.A. and solve cases, not get an insight on Phelps´ marital life. What surprised me though was the fact that having a mistress is/was apparently a much more serious transgression for a policeman´s integrity than taking bribes from prominent gangsters, running hookers, or engaging in conspiracy to fuck over the average taxpayer.
Yeah, it´s a bit risky having those bits of story in potentially missable clues, but as a narrative idea, I really liked it. It starts off seemingly unrelated, you don´t know who those people are or what the point of their storyline is, but as you progress through the story, it (and the Marine flashbacks) start intertwining with the main cases and it´s really cool.
Oh boy, you should try reading a James Ellroy novel some day!
What fascinates me about Earle is that despite him being an utterly corrupt glorious arsehole, he´s actually rather capable as a cop. Obviously lacks any drive and dedication or moral compass, but he knows his shit so to say.
Not rumours, confirmed facts (cut cause it wouldn´t all fit on the disk).
It´s actually cool how the The Naked City is similar to the film in a lot of details. The film itself is fun too, like maybe way too amusing for a noir.
One other stand-out you didn´t mention is The Set Up, also based on a film of the same name (a very interesting one, since it takes place sort of “in real time”, but focuses on the boxer´s perspective - this one has a lot more differences though).
AK´s not kidding. The Dahlia murder was gruesome and makes the murders in the game look like a picnic. It´s seriously disturbing. If you do decide to check it out, it´ll give you a whole different perspective on the shed scene in the final Murder case…
Adultery is a felony offense with two states (Michigan and Oklahoma) still considering it a felony, around half the states consider it a misdemeanor offense. Though ironically California was one of the first states to abolish such laws.
Also the Suburban Redevelopment Fund didn’t just screw over the average taxpayer, they were also planning to screw over the military.
Damn, I have no reservations against playing on multiple disks. It is a shame they had to gut so much over such an odd reason. But then again I don’t know how to program so maybe it is harder than it looks.
I will say for Kingdom Hearts 1 (and really the rest of the series), it is a fairly linear action game with RPG elements. Very much a different beast from Baldur’s Gate 3.
Also KH1 is a decent length but not huge, I’d probably say 20-25 hours range.
Replaying Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake. This is 8-bit perfection and another great thing is discovering even all the way back in 1990 when it was released, a stealth camouflage existed, here in the form of a placeable mat (wich also appears in Peace Walker).
Welp, you guys almost got me a 3-way tie between Jedi Survivor, Cyberpunk and Pacific Drive!
But thankfully schatenjager put one vote in and made Jedi the crowning victor!
Cool, cool. I’ll probably be done Astro Bot sometime this weekend and then I can really get into Jedi Survivor… that is if BG3 hasn’t totally sucked me in hehehe
I am still playing Elden Ring Shadow of Erdtree DLC:
Firstly getting to the dlc location was quiet challenging to beat the blocking boss who uses a cheat code “Nihil Nihil Nihil” on me and I get kill for no reason (not sure how I beat him 2 years ago - maybe by cheese or glitch which was patched) - but made it through after levelling up.
With my experience of patience and stealth from Hitman games, It took a long time to earn runes and reach next level.
Here is the trick if it is helpful:
(Gold Scarab + Gold Pickle Foot) : 17219 runes per 10 seconds
The best sword is Rune Greatsword and the best spirit is Black Knight Tiche learned from previous completion.
On the DLC, Frenzy boss was quiet challenging but I am still trying to beat the Snake Man boss.
And of course Malenia is the most toughest boss, reminds me of Genichiro from Sekiro. Here is a way to defeat her in phase 1 very easily but Phase 2 is like Genichiro part 2. Now the dialogue “I am Malenia, Blade of Miquella” is breaking my patience, well we know you are Malenia, Blade of Miquella, we can see it above your health bar
Lastly a sword from a boss who always says “TOGETHAAAA” at the end of favourite dialogue is quiet useful.
I am playing Spider-Man 2 so far I am enjoying it but it remains to be seen if I still will going forward since I have a particular pet hatred of most of the symbiotes (by most I mean all but Agent Venom).
Sorry mate, not yet As someone who thoroughly enjoyed Gunpoint, I´m planning on getting it eventually, but there are just too many games coming out in the next few months that have potential priority as far as my bank account is concerned
Me and @TheChicken have been playing A Way Out, getting near the end of it. It’s been a lot of fun. Going to start Borderlands 1 together soon. I used to be a big Borderlands fan, kindof fell off when BL3 came out. So it’s going to be nice for me to return to the franchise and see what TheChicken makes of it, and force him to listen to my rants about where the franchise went wrong.
Just for some meme context: we recently got to a climactic part of the story where one of the characters’ wife is about to have a baby, and they make it to a hospital to find her.
The moment we step through the doors, I say “ohh shoot, I remember this area, wait it has the best minigame of the whole game!”
…It’s connect four, yeah.
Also, an Old Boy hallway fight reference that I jumped out of my seat for. I hadn’t seen OB when I first played this some 5/6 years ago…
So I just finished Spider-Man 2 good but the Symbiote plot kind of bogged down what had been a plot that had been even better than the first game’s story and as enemies the Symbiotes kinda sucked thought they made for some interesting boss fights at least.
On the plus side this game has Sandman, Mysterio, The Lizard and The Chameleon in it so I am pretty happy all things considered. Ironically this game that has my two most despised Spider-Man villains it also has some of my favourites except they jobbed my boy Shocker, fucking Russians can’t let me have shit.
70 hours in, I’ve finally got 100% of the achievements in Tactical Breach Wizards. The post-campaign extra gameplay content was utterly brain-breaking in the best possible way - insanely difficult, and yet with all the tools you need to wipe the floor with each level.
An absolutely perfect game, on the level of Portal 1&2, HITMAN: World Of Assassination and Disco Elysium - genuinely one of the best I’ve ever played.
I beat “World 5” basically of Astro Bot, so I just have a few main levels to clean up then I assume it’s just the final boss to defeat? (plus there’s some secret levels I haven’t got yet).
So tonight I’ll get to the final “area” if there is one with a final set of levels, and I’ll be done the main stuff in the game! It’s been fun!
Uhhh, also last night I started Jedi Survivor because omg I was just feeling the hype, and it’s good!
There’s really not all that much I know about the game since I didn’t follow all the marketing, but so far, it’s capturing that same fun of platforming and exploration as Fallen Order.
Chapter 1 on Coruscant (or at least one very very small part of the city planet) is pretty darn fun and it’s very pretty to boot! Great “seedy underworld” aesthetic with lots of neon signs and industrial lighting in between areas.
I love love looove the metroidvania progression, going off the beaten path to find secrets, finding areas you can’t access but know you will later, its great!
Great that this game starts you off with quite a few abilities you needed to progress to access in J:FO. Feels like I’m already nicely powerful and experienced and I can’t wait to see more. Just finished the Ninth Sister boss fight last night and stopped there. Will probably continue tonight if I finish Astro Bot.
Also they fixed the map readability mostly. It’s more simple shapes, totally opaque, higher-contrast colours between whats the game map and what’s the visual map on the edge.
However it’s still projected in 3D all at once and some sections can get in your visible way if you rotate the map enough.
I just learned on my break that thanks to updates, the game has a very solid 60FPS mode on PS5. But RT is turned off and it can lead to some ugly aliasing and reflection bleeding with some textures like water.
It also has a nice Quality mode with raytraced reflections and lighting, but, for some reason on the second planet in the game, it tanks when near some large rivers. Down to like 15FPS instead of 30.
I’ve started the game and haven’t changed it from Quality, thinking I’d be okay with 30fps and good quality visuals, (the basic PS4 version only had the normal locked 30fps IIRC…) but… I might have to change it to Performance, ehh…
Me and @TheChicken finished A Way Out. Enjoyed it, it’s a fun co-op romp that is a bit on the short side, but doesn’t feel like it has any real filler. Granted, it does feel a bit like a tech demo at times, and compared to the studio’s next game, It Takes Two, it does feel a lot smaller in scale. Still though, I had a great time. Definetly interested to see what Hazelight’s next game will be.
Me and @TheChicken have started on Borderlands 1 now. It’s like meeting up with an old friend for me, and I think I’m already annoying Chicken with my knowledge about everything.
I’ve been slowly playing the Episode Aigis DLC for Persona 3 Reload, should hopefully finish it soon. I’ll probably ramble about it on here but also will have to spoiler tag the whole thing so noone will read it but it’ll make me feel happy anyway.
On the Atlus front, Metaphor: ReFantazio comes out on October 11th, which I will be definetly picking up. They’ve released the start of the game for free as a demo which you can download. Apparently the PC version has been suffering from performance issues so hopefully Atlus will be able to get that sorted soon. Seems like the early press about it has been positive, although rather hilarious how many people and gaming news sites are like “this is just like Persona!” when the whole point of this is for Sega and Atlus to try and establish a brand new AAA IP away from Persona and Shin Megami Tensei. I’m actually hoping to jump in pretty blind, Atlus have released a mountain of info about the game, so much so that form what I’ve heard it spoils a pretty massive chunk of it, so aside from seeing a couple of the early trailers
Also plan to return to Yakuza 7 soon, I really want to try and get 7, Gaiden, and 8 wrapped up before the new Pirate game comes out.
I beat Astro Bot tonight. Well worth the price of admission, it was full of joy and cuteness and nice platforming levels.
The final level against the Big Bad Boss is a lot of fun, put a big smile on my face, goshhh the robots are all so cute.
The ending also extremely surprised me in that they went for a fake ‘bad’ ending…
Astro, having defeated the boss, gets grabbed in a last-ditch effort by the alien as it’s sucked into a black hole…
All the bots who’ve joined you all unite to grab hold, but Astro loves his friends… and he lets go…
And the credits begin to roll as all the bots begun crying (I didn’t actually think they’d really kill him off lmao, I was really laughing due to how audacious of a joke/somber moment they crammed into this fairly happy game.)
Thankfully, Astro gets blasted off from the far reaches of space back to the group, but is injured, almost non-functional.
So, with the Robotic Motion Arms that keep appearing throughout the game, you put him back together piece by piece, until the credits finally roll as everyone rejoices.
The credits are also a whole lot of fun. Team Asobi really love making some fun interactive credits it seems, including all the powerups in the game so far (mostly).
Very fun game, can’t wait to complete all the secret levels and challenge levels, and what the free speedun DLC might bring.
I will say, for whatever reason it really stuck out to me that there’s only one level dedicated to the Mouse power-up. (Where you can enter small spaces and go under objects for secrets) or even the Sponge or Monkey Climb ones too…
It was a pretty neat level with lots of fun hiding spots for goodies, I’m surprised they only used it once. Other P-Ups like the Dog, Gloves, and Stopwatch have tons levels for them. (Also the Chicken which I’m very happy about)
