If you’re on pc and liked Jusant then i’d highly recommend checking out Cairn. There’s no release date yet but there’s a demo on steam which i’ve already sunk 11 hours into. It’s another climbing game, but you control each limb individually, and there’s no specific highlighted routes to the top - just here’s a mountain, get to the top however you can/want to. I’m really looking forward to the full release.
I’ve been playing Ghost of Tsushima the past few weeks.
It’s a wonderful, gorgeous game. Very cinematic, probably very romanticized version of ancient Japan and its Samurai culture and codes, but as a video game, it works for what it wants to be/tell.
It does fall into some repetitive collectibles busywork and “go to the question marks” map design that Ubisoft titles do, but it makes up for it in spades with very minimal UI and a focus on in-world guidance markers such as following golden birds to undiscovered locations or foxes to upgrade shrines
(And I’ve been using the “expert” HUD style recently which makes some UI elements smaller/more infrequent and removes text from some button prompts)
Plus, the writing is very good, with quite moving side-missions and stories at times. Not to mention the main plot about Jin’s fall from his rigid Samurai code and into guerilla tactics and shinobi tricks to combat the immense Mongol invasion is good. It’s just very cool, and well-performed by the actors.
(When it comes to some mission “cutscenes” though, a lot of them usually involve two characters standing and talking with camera cuts, some canned animations that flow together nicely, but stand out compared to some of the more impressive clearly-motion-captured scenes. Again, very barebones ubisofty.)
From what I’ve seen of the sequel already, it looks like they really improved the facial capture and animation tech, so hopefully that deepens the immersion for the more simple scenes when that game comes out.
I also really love how the game is chock-full of random encounters with unique dialogue and interactions. Some are really short “tiny stories” that just involve Jin approaching some NPC, something happens or you do one task, then that’s it and you feel something.
Others are like, “Hey, this person is sick, please help track down how this water poisoning happened and stop it” which triggers a whole in-world, non-tracked mini-mission of following environmental details to fulfill the quest and get some bonus XP out of it. It’s cool!
I’m in the middle of Act 2 of the story and just started the IKI ISLAND expansion. Yes, most people probably played this after they’d finished the story, but the devs did let you unlock it by Act 2’s start, and I’ve heard it adjusts a bit based on how far into the Main Story you are…
Though it’s also quite tougher than the main game since enemies can changes stances on the fly like you can, and also have much quicker attacks. But I’m very skilled already, so I can still scrape by.
Opinion varies but I found this cool discussion about how it’s narratively satisfying to play the DLC mid-story. (I decided to go to Iki before I get the Sakai Armour, as the DLC heavily focuses on Jin’s samurai father and legacy.)

So far, so cool. The main hook of this area is that Jin gets shipwrecked basically, so you’re locked into this area until you can probably get help to get out.
Also, he’s poisoned by a new Mongol tribe called the Eagle Tribe that uses a powerful hallucinogenic poison to control and manipulate their prey.
It’s especially cool since I assume until I finish the Main Missions of the DLC, Jin can encounter tons of random encounter hallucinations or dead bodies that are pretty cool or spooky. It also changes some tasks (like Lighting Lighthouses for XP, where one time I did it, it immediately gave me a hallucination of Jin’s dad appearing and talking about it.) You also get every now and then flashes of Jin’s inner psyche portrayed by The Eagle - evil mongol cult leader, taunting him of his insecurities and faults.
EDIT: Holy shit, I’m playing it right now and I just encountered a vision during a Hot Springs activity (the most chill places in the game for meditation) - the Eagle asking Jin to “take your sword, open your wrists, and slip under the water” - And also after saving someone in one random enemy encounter: it referenced a side mission in the main game!! God, they put a lot of work into this main plot hook bleeding into the open-world busywork…!
And speaking of Detail, I like how the Main Menu changes based on which Act in the story you’re on, plus if you’re in Iki or not!
“New Game” is your basic sword-blowing-in-white-field scene.
Going to Legends Mode changes it red with papers flying in the wind.
And while I am on Iki and also Poisoned, the Continue option turns the screen a tinted purple and has lavender/poison petals(?) blowing in the wind too.
I’m playing the game in English on Normal.
But I’m already thinking of doing a New Game Plus playthrough in Kurosawa Mode (JP+subs, B&W filter, increased wind) on Lethal difficulty lol (both enemies and yourself do more damage/die quickly by the blade)
…and I should also probably watch a Kurosawa movie since they were clearly big inspirations on the team.
Anyway, someone talk to me about this game and what you liked about it, I need to gush about it more haha
Im also currently replaying it, its one of those games where i sometimes just stop and admire the scenery.
I’m looking forward to Ghost of Yotei.
Also love it. I plan to replay it sometime soon.
And yeah a Kurosawa mode / Lethal playthrough is a must (as is watching his films!)
And the coop mode was surprisingly fun too, although annoying when people dropped out.
I like the idea about the game, the combat was fun and the world was picturesque. However everything else felt extremely dated, like playing a PS3 open world game, empty and extremely scripted.
The story was kinda a dull, with a few emotional highlights that paid off.
I tried to replay it a few months ago, had to give up. I can’t be bothered. For me it’s a 6/10. The combat kept me engaged.
I’m also playing Kiborg, its a Roguelike arena fighter set in a Prison galactic TV show, where inmates fight to death.
Fighting system is reminiscent of Arkham games, but not as smooth, this is a AA-Game and it shows, but its fun so far nonetheless.
I’ve been ill the last few days. On Saturday I got a cold that hit me like a truck, I had a migraine for 18 hours, ended up having to take 2 days off work. I’m feeling a lot better but still rather sickly. Trying to just take it very easy right now.
Playing the Hundred Line, I’ve reached the point now where I’ve started to unlock endings. The game was advertised as having a hundred endings, and those endings all being “proper” endings too, rather than just chepa 5 second game over messages or what have you. I currently have 22 endings thus far, and yeah, I think that claim that they are all “proper” endings is pretty true. I actually got a bit discouraged because the very first ending I got, well… I think it might be the worst possible ending in the game. Or rather, it is so bad, I would be shocked if there is another ending that has a worse outcome. The game has a very handy chapter select function, meaning it is easy to go back and do alternate routes for alternate endings. Not sure if I have the patience to do all 100, but I’d like to try and at least get 50 of them. Will report back on this.
In a nice bit of cross promotion, the directors of Hundred Line and Expedition 33 have each recommended the other team’s game. Sadly though, it’s currently unclear if Hundred Line’s sales are strong enough yet. As stated before the game went on sale, the studio was put in debt to fund the game, and apparently it seems unclear if it has made enough to keep the studio open. No sign of a console port to PS5 or Xbox either in the future sadly. I’ve enjoyed Hundred Line a lot, so I really hope it doesn’t kill the studio, or that maybe they can maybe make a deal with another publisher to get it on more platforms?
i played on lethal, and it’s generally pretty well balanced, but the duels are absolutely horrendous - i powered through most of them by spamming the special attacks, but i had to turn the difficulty down for the very last DLC boss. it seems like they have as much health as they do on normal, but they still one shot you
I’m playing Doom The Dark Ages. I’ve done one playthrough on Ultra Violence with some replaying of levels to clear them 100%. That took roughly 20 hours give or take. Now I’m doing a second run on Pandemonium which is basically an extra life/permadeath game mode. I’ve tweaked the settings to be very forgiving this time.
I’m conflicted. There’s alot to love here, I see where they’re going with the combat loop. The game director has been vocal about taking inspiration from this scene
and it shows! The combat is very akin to that but it comes at a heavy cost. While all the guns feel good and are fun to use, there’s so much overlap between their use cases that it barely matters which one you choose to use.
Your weapon swap is slow and it locks you out of blocking/and parrying so you end up not really wanting to switch guns mid fight. This is a huge departure from 2016 and Eternal that had fast weapon switching as the bread and butter.
I can respect them for trying something new and, while not as deep as Eternal, it’s really satisfying and crunchy. I just wish there was more of a design overlap because it lacks that sweaty 180 km/h gameplay I loved from the former games.
For example, I’m baffled why they made the rocket launcher self healing on parry. At that point it stops being a high risk/high reward weapon and just becomes another slow fire rate and big damage weapon, which there are already four of. It ends up being something you pull out if you’re low on health and aim it at your feet, very weird.
I don’t like the new type of levels. A big portion of the levels are now wide open areas that have you destroy 3 things/clear hordes. What ends up happening is you will probably get a little lost and having to run around and open up your map very often to progress. It doesn’t funnel you into the action in the same way the other games do. Even with the traditional, linear levels, it feels like level design has taken a backseat. Maybe it’s due to the combat being at its best on a flat plane, I don’t know, but you don’t see those awesome multi level arenas with jump pads and choke points.
Another thing is the dragon and mech parts. What the hell were they thinking? They’re nothing more than minigames, yet they stretch them out way too long for what it is. Very disappointing and not very epic. There’s absolutely nothing positive to write about them. In 2016 it’s hinted that you fought a Great One of immeasurable strength and ferocity and it sounded so cool, but actually seeing how they did it? It sucks. Fighting the basic hellknight is way cooler and it saddens me to no end. It’s unbelievable how barebones it is and it’s hard to believe this is from the same people that made Eternal.
If you’re gonna branch out and add new stuff, why would you make some shitty half-arsed attempt that disrespects everything the modern Doom games have set up thus far.
To quickly touch on the soundtrack. It’s not Mick Gordon. A composer that has reached legendary status for his previous work on this franchise. The old soundtracks are lovingly created and full of character and catchy songs. This game has music done by a music production group called Finishing Inc. and while servicable, it’s nothing to write home about. It just blends into the background and nothing stands out. This is with me having the music set to 100% and sound effects at 50%. Why oh why did Marty Stratton have to burn that bridge with Mick. Imagine what he would’ve done withe this medieval theme uuuuuugh.
It’s still all very new to me. Even if I sound overly negative I genuinely think the majority is really good. Another concern of mine is the longevity factor. I’m not sure I will put hundreds of hours into this one as I have with the others. We’ll see.
7/10, too much God of War inspiration
I’ve once again started playing the Tomb Raider Survivor Trilogy. Hope the new Tomb Raider will be announced on Summer Games Fest
I’m not playing. Not yet(?). Just posting this here for @Agent1980.
Perhaps you are playing, dah?
With that done, i moved on to Shadow of the Tomb Raider. Shadow could have been my favorite game of the trilogy - i love the jungle setting, looks fantastic and the tombs are top notch, but it has some things that irritate the hell out of me, like those Costume restrictions within the city.
I get that Lara needs to disguise her to infiltrate the cult areas of the city, but why the fuck do i have to wear those ugly clothes in the other parts of the town as well
Can we get a close-up of the Birkin figure? This whole setup is so cool.
Yeah sure when i get home I’ll take you a couple of pictures. If you’re interested its the Action figure from Toy Biz, its from the 90s and originally came packaged with a Sherry Birkin figure, but Sherry was missing so i got William cheap on ebay. The same company produced the Ivy statue thats standing next to it, i really like that one, it’s head is made out of some rubber material and when you push the button on its back its mouth? Blossom opens.
The Hunter figure is made by a company named Palisades.
I finally finished The Hundred Line: Last Defence Academy, and got all 100 endings. It took a while, this is a long game. But I don’t regret doing it, I mostly had a great time, I think that is a genuinely great experience.
Do I recommend this game: Yes, although I would say maybe play Danganronpa first, it’s by the same writer, and you can get the Danganronpa trilogy cheap on sale nowadays. If you like those, you should like Last Defence Academy, as well as Rain Code.
Would I recommend doing all 100 endings: No, unless you’re super invested.
Hundred Line is a game that I think works best the more blind you are going into it. My advice for anyone who does play it would be to play it normally, see what ending you get. Go back, do different choices to see what happens. But as soon as you start getting a bit bored, fire up a guide, and take it from there.
So I got to the start of Act 3 in Ghost of Tsushima last night, meaning I’m in the final stretch.
Also means I saw the infamous scene where your personal horse dies…
I was already spoiled on the death since the game’s a few years old and I came across some discussion that mentioned it it at some point. But it was still a heavy hitting, brought-me-to-tears moment.
I’m sure I would have been sad if they’d have killed the horse quickly, just a sudden unfortunate moment, but it was so much worse because they really drew it out…
So you escape from the shogun’s camp on horseback, your horse gets shot with two arrows in the back, but you still keep moving full-speed. Then they both play a gorgeous song in japanese and do a little montage of Jin travelling north.
The horse is running, then walking, then stumbling, before it finally stops, collapses, and takes its last breaths… And Jin is just as heartbroken as me by this point too…
Cut to white, “Act 3 - Kill the Khan” title card, and damn… that was fuckin cinema but goddamnit I’m crying and can’t see what I’m playing anymore. Good job Sucker Punch, living up to your name finally…
Currently on my 3rd playthrough of RDR2.
Played it release week in 2018, then again during covid times and now again in 2025.
Trying to pass the time until the release of GTA6. I’m amazed at how mich stuff I’m still discovering that I’ve never seen before.
Playing Oblivion gave me the Skyrim bug so I just had to finally be caught trying to cross the border all over again.
Going from one to the other wasn’t all that stark but I do kinda miss the acrobatics skill. Yesterday I went back to Cyrodiil just to jump all over Bravil.
Daggerfall Unity when though?
