Yeah, way back when, you couldn’t purchase a phone (not cheaply anyway). Lots of people rented equipment from utility providers. Look at cable modems and routers today. We rent them from the providers.
In computer science, we learned about arrangements that IBM, for example, had and still has with certain corporations where mainframes were leased from providers instead of being purchased.
So I suppose it’s probably more common even now than we think about, but it’s probably not the best for a long-term solution.
And not smart for cheap stuff. Like for your grandfather I can see how times changed and he just missed it. It’s also only 1 phone. Very different from him buying a new home in 1985 and choosing to rent a phone for $5 a month instead of buying for $30 total.
Also I assume servers cost lots of money and there is the lack of hassle bc usually the leasing company will handle fixes etc. a microwave can just be thrown away if it breaks lol.
Yeah, very true, and there are obvious advantages to leasing something like a mainframe. For one, you only pay for the actual CPUs that you’re using, even if the hardware contains more than that. For another, a lot of leased equipment has certain guarantees from the provider if it breaks, needs to be upgraded, becomes obsolete, etc.
In the case of a microwave? I think that the microwave I have right now doesn’t do much that the one my family got in 1981 didn’t do. That technology hasn’t changed all that much.
This one IS the one your family got in 1981 . When I said I found “similar” ones for sale I meant by size. All the new ones have presets and some other technology stuff. Ours have start/stop and the ability to type in how many minutes.
Just applied for a new Full Time Position at the job I’ve been with for the better part of a decade now. I’m simply trying to chase the bag and those highly sought after benefits.
Just gotta mention – Darnell Abraham who is playing George Washington: he’s got a fantastic voice (though I don’t like the southern-type accent he’s putting on, some of his "I"s and "A"s are getting lost)
Anyway, I’m impressed with his mini biography/credits section in the programme. The first thing he lists off is TEKKEN 7 - also specifying it sold over 9 million copies worldwide. lol thats a unique credit. Good for him. (Anyone recognize him? I don’t play it.)
I got my driver’s license yesterday morning This was after 7 years of permits expiring, having to retake the test 3 times over the course of 8 years, and depression getting in the way (god that sounds like an awful rendition of “12 days of Christmas”). It’s surreal. Honestly I never thought I’d live this long to even accomplish this. After that, I had to return to my retail job after months of being away which got me down, but when I returned home I bought a little flamingo plush online as a sort of reward for it all. Hitman 2 is my favorite game ever, so this stuffed animal will commemorate that and it’s a reminder to keep going…even when things seem unlikely.
Our daughter was born nearly 3 weeks ago, so that’s kept me occupied, no time for gaming now I’m glad i rushed to get to level 100 in freelancer. Anyway, I’m slowly adjusting to being a parent again, you really cherish every second of peace and quiet
It’s never too late, my older brother is 24 and refuses to get a license purely out of laziness. So congratulations! I’ll be extra vigilant (perhaps use my instinct vision) when in Jersey just to get out of your way.
I thought the same at first, but a few weeks after getting my license I decided to go on a 1 1/2 hour drive to a neighboring county alone. Driving on Turnpikes and and Interstate Highways don’t worry me anymore.
Im sure you’ve used options like a public transit systems that makes your life manageable. The crux of the issue is him being complicit where he is thinking he’ll always have my twin to rely on getting a ride to places. While yes he could use public transport, he’s not gonna make the effort to use it.
Im not at liberty to speak on his situation, but eventually my twin and her fiancé are gonna see him as a inconvenience when they’re trying to build up their life and won’t have time to give him rides to place.
Are we still talking about cars? I had someone crash into me two hours ago and cave in my passenger side door, stupid little compact Mazda 2 killed my Mitsubishi Lancer. I am fine and so is the person who ran into me. My boss also happened to drive right by the scene on his way to work, gave me a day off on the spot so I get a long weekend at the cost of my car which is a complete write off.
