CHONGQING, China (Mission #4) - Location Discussion

Sorry for bothering you with Codename 47 again, but with Rasmus Højengaard back at IO… Can we hope we’ll see a Stream about it, like you did for Blood Money? :crossed_fingers:

I posted an ode to this mission a few months back, I’ll repost it here. It is my favorite location within the entire franchise.

I love this map. It makes me nostalgic for obvious Hitman: Codename 47 reasons, but the synth wave/cyberpunk vibes also remind me a lot of Blade Runner, another franchise I love.

And there’s a third franchise connection I see I want to talk about here.

Was anyone else reminded of Deux Ex? I felt the level in Hong Kong resembled the atmosphere in Chongqing in so many ways:

  • Destitute people in the streets
  • A few commerces open
  • The walkways by the riverside and leading away from the station reminded me a lot of the canal distict
  • Everything on the outside looks antiquated and derelict, aside from the neon lights.
  • Crawling through vents: never been done so extensively in the Hitman series before, was a huge thing in Deus Ex. Same goes for hacking in general.
  • Under that old and dark facade lies a wildly modern complex full of light: Versalife - ICA Data HQ
  • Data Core and Universal Constructor share similar architecture
  • The liften collar on 47’s Neon Suit could be a nod to Denton’s outfit.

Probably a stretch, but still, the list is there and looks pretty objective to me.

In any case, I’m going to enjoy this map a bit more before moving on to Mendoza.

And the dream I had!:

I literally had a dream last night about this map. Probably due to me listening to the Chongqing soundtrack shortly before going to sleep. Consider it a recommendation because it has some very awesome tracks.

The dream was magical!

I was on the same map, but at the crack of dawn. You had these angelic voices from the song, the soft hum of the city, and I was strolling on the walkway while on the horizon this golden light with hues of pink was shining through the refreshing drizzle. The warm glow of the sunrise was reflected in the wet windows all around and it made me feel light and content.

Probably lasted 5 seconds or so but it was positively beautiful.

It also probably means I spend too much time with this game. And that I should get into VR gaming.

We are actually talking about doing more “legacy” streams, where we look back at the older games.

I got Chiba City vibes from the level. I don’t know if anyone even remembers what that is from, but if you do, you’d have to agree.

Chongqing’s level design still continues to impress!
I just found another agility shortcut.

(please excuse the gluttony sound effects)

Seems very easy way to get past the locked door once you know that, but I never did before so I guess it’s not too easy. :joy:

I discovered that last week too and I enjoyed the feeling that gave me :slightly_smiling_face:

Am I an outsider for finding this quite literally on my first Playthrough?

Level design on Hitman is absolutely stellar. Actually it’s the only thing I enjoy in this game.

Standing, holding umbrella in rain, and having conversation with women waiting by a vista by the railing waiting for her friend to show up. There is a tone of despair in her voice and 47 sounds sympathetic to her.

Shout out to the writing team for realistic, casual dialog between two lonely people brought together by happenstance, standing in the rain together.

If I am not mistaken, this exchange is to introduce a bit of humanity in 47, and also highlight 47’s loneliness as a hired assassin usually waiting for instructions from his handler (who is not around for him in this mission of Hitman III).

Have the Chongqing elite guard outfits been changed?

A beta version maybe,

the colour scheme of the armband corresponds to the badge colour scheme/security level access
(basic guards have a blue badge, analysts a yellow one, technicians a red one, each correspond to the security level in the facility)

Maybe at first the security access was supposed to be indicated via the armband, before they went for a more visible disguise coding with red beret, yellow aiguillette and red shoulders for this particular disguise and more general indications (the yellow tie of the analysts. red outfit of the technicians…). Certainly for a better and smoother flow/design.

I haven’t really commented on this mission’s thread since joining the forum, and I guess it’s time. I have to say, Chongqing was the map I was most excited for and most looking forward to, and it is by far the one that I was most disappointed by. This is mainly due to two things.

  1. As I’ve mentioned elsewhere on the forum, I absolutely resent the story decision to have 47 bring down the ICA. I think it was unnecessary, insulting, and completely avoidable, and a whole different scenario could have been written for having 47 break into a data storage facility under a Chinese city. Before we found out the facts, I thought it was going to be part of Providence’s conservative think-tank mentioned in the Ark Society mission. Opportunity lost, disappointing reality ensues.

  2. I honestly expected a Chinese mega city to have a LOT more NPCs. I was expecting something more like Mumbai or Marrakesh or Miami, where you’re having to shoulder past the crowd in nearly every public space, but amped to 11. Instead, we get an extremely and improbably sparse few blocks of public streets with about as much population density as the hotel in Bangkok. Now, true, it is the middle of the night in that time zone, and it’s raining, but are we really expecting that to affect what is regarded as the largest city in the world if the entire metropolitan center is considered one area? I wanted a massive crowd for 47 to make his way through, like what I imagine a real city in China would be, particularly one designed as a stand-in for Hong Kong.

All that being said, I ultimately did enjoy the level and performing the objectives, but compared to what I was hoping for when Chongqing was first announced, what we got left me with a bitter aftertaste. I imagine I ended up sharing the sentiments of people who went to theaters to see Kangaroo Jack based off what they saw in the tv spots.

I think the decision to take down ICA was not only to drum up the drama, but was IOI giving themselves an out in case they truly never returned to the franchise. The only reason we go to Chongqing at all is because Hall’s laptop getting hacked is a deus ex machina; otherwise the attention would have turned towards the case file, and pursuing Edwards.

In terms of story, I don’t think IOI had any more narrative runway to flesh out a full game after the deaths of the Partners. Berlin and Chongqing act as a sort of buffer before we return to a Providence-oriented mission in Mendoza. I can’t see IOI doing more Providence filler before that gets really stale.

I agree with the idea that terminating ICA may have been premature but it may have been the kick the story needed. One way or the other, ICA and 47 would come to a head considering he kidnapped their client and Diana falsified reports.

I really hope we get some bonus mission DLC or seasonal event that’s permanent which revamps Chongqing to be more populated. Chinese New Year’s coming up in a few months

yea its all i want. With contracts of course and not weak map like Snow festival… something more like Landside

I think the whole ica thing is disappointing that actually fell on a big Chinese city, but its make sense because chonqing its city of cyber and future and very digital , but still disapointed that we missed the nucleus and the big city design (kind of the chinese mumbai)because the story of the game. too bad it did not fall on another destination

I see. What other destination would you have liked to see instead?

I think the most appropriate for this mission its Chongqing , but we missed the city that we all really wanted to see. I think maybe in Dubai it could be great Dubai anyway small map the pure version of Hitman Blood money Las vegas
