Yeah I figured that was the reason. But all retailers have the game out on the 20th in Aus as you said. Also, it seems Xbox also releases the day before.

Could someone help answer me this then:

If I buy hitman 3 on a physical disc for ps4, am I still eligible for a free ps5 upgrade?

Yes, but you’ll need the disc in your PS5 in order to play it.

Are Xbox preorders unlocking at midnight local time? It makes it really strange they would mess with the PlayStation times. I’m really hoping Travis confirms it’s just a glitch.

All it’s going to do is piss people off.

If PS5 has a USB port, than I assume one can plug in external DVD-drive, can’t he?
Though it’s not that convenient, but I guess a way out

I don’t think PlayStations recognize external disc drives, just storage drives. (Even if they did, you’d need a blu-ray drive.)

I also highly doubt USB is fast enough to stream the data to the processor at the speed it is expected from internal drives.

For Xbox it’s says January 20th 8:00 AM.

I’m assuming this is a just a place holder and it’s gonna unlock locally for people at-least for Xbox. So I’d say if it’s locally the earliest for people to play is 12 AM NZ Time which is 6 AM EST for me, but that’s if you change your Console Location to New Zealand.

The Epic Release release might simply unlock for everyone all at once similar to Cyberpunk.

For PS4/PS5 who really knows. The only thing we will know is if and when Travis gives us the details on release times, but I feel that will be the last thing we will get for news.

I just don’t understand why they would even opt for a worldwide release timing for digital, when discs are going to be available for sale 26 hours before that time in New Zealand in our equivalent of Walmart that is open at midnight and will legally be able to sell the game. Disc preorders will be out for delivery 21 hours before the digital unlock. If it’s to stop spoilers coming out of NZ/AU, that strategy has already failed.

I don’t understand their reasoning at all. What is the advantage here?

I don’t think it’s for stopping spoilers but a midnight release is maybe hard for them to monitor if there are any issue with the server

I would say that staggering the release by using midnight local releases would prevent server issues. Now everyone that wants to play it at the earliest possible chance are all going to connect at the same time and will be hammering the servers.

I wonder how release time will work for Stadia? Hopefully not based on US times for the entire globe.

The unlock time for PS4 is REALLY off…wayyy off. As of right now the countdown is going to 8am EST which is EIGHT hours late.

This unlock time is unheard of on PS4 though…through the years all the games I preordered digitally on PS4 have always unlocked at midnight EST/EDT. Never before have I had a problem like this with a digital game unlocking 8 hours late.

Not really a huge deal, can’t always have everything geared towards your timezone :man_shrugging: at least yours is 8am, near when your day starts. Mine is at 13:00, so I’ll just be twiddling my thumbs till 1 :wink:

Lucky. The game will be unlocking for 26 hours after I was expecting it to unlock.

Damn time zones.

When/if IO confirm this, I’ll just cancel the digital pre-order, go buy a disc and have the game 21 hours “early”.
