The Booze Thread

I’m certainly no Cigar expert - but heard great things about Olivas. And at the risk of sounding stupid - how would you compare them to Cohiba or Montecristo? Personally, i preferred the smell and taste of Cohiba vs Montecristo, but i’m def no expert! lol. And there are so many variations I’m just stabbing in the dark!

Also, keeping in line with the Booze thread, any recommendations for a nice Cigar-Drink pairing?

We made some white mojitos yesterday. Sorry I don’t have a photo.

It was supposed to be a coconut mojito. Made the normal way but with coconut rum instead of plain rum and then after you have it in the glass and ready to serve you pour in some coconut milk just until the entire liquid goes white. Someone accidentally bought almond milk instead of coconut. We made them anyway and found it was better to just use regular rum with the almond milk.

Well, Olivas are “New World” cigars from Nicaragua which means they’re generally a bit stronger/richer than Cubans, and have more flavours like coffee, chocolate and leather whereas Cubans like Cohiba and Montecristos are milder and tend to have more nutty, wood and biscuit profiles.
Although of course there are hundreds of different cigars out there with all kinds of flavours so like anything with taste it’s one of those things where you find out what you like mostly by trial and error.

(Personally I also prefer Cubans in general)

Similarly with drink pairings you find the cigar you like first and then experiment with drink till you find your sweet spot.

Although I posted a beer it’s not usually something I pair with… generally I prefer a nice coffee such as a Latte or Cappuccino. Although if you do want an alcoholic pairing, Guinness goes surprisingly well with most cigars. Brandy and whisky are obviously the more “traditional” choices although they can overpower your smoke and numb your palate.

Dr. Pepper is also really popular, especially with New Worlds.

At the end of the day though, there really aren’t any rules -some cigar snobs will tell you that you must only drink “this with that” etc. but as long as YOU enjoy it, that’s all that matters…

I’ve seen guys smoking £200 Cohiba Behikes with a Monster energy drink, no fucks given lol.

Have to admit I’ve never tried a cigar with a nice coffee. Usually with a nice whisky or brandy - but by your description and judging by my own experience/admission - I’m certainly an amateur lol.

Thanks for the tips. I will try an Olivas one day soon :relaxed:

A friend brought over the GL12. Nothing fancy, but when we opened it we noticed they included a small bottle of the GL14 cognac cask. Genius marketing! Oh here little boy you like decent stuff? Why not try better stuff and then start buying that? :joy:.

I was allowed to select the whisky tonight. I wanted some American.

Let me know how you like it. I have not tried it.

I like the classic Old no.7. But the Single Barrel Select is premium whiskey, it’s much better for sipping compared to the blended no.7. It’s richer, sweeter and more complex compared to the traditional. Is it the best Whiskey? no, I still prefer my Masterson’s. That said if you enjoy Jack Daniels, then it’s highly likely you will enjoy this.

I actually don’t like Jack, but based on what you said I might like this one.

I don’t drink. But all of my male relatives drink Johnny Walker Black.

Where about do you live? I prefer single malts to blended scotch but there is a finite amount of scotch produced each year and, sadly, that means it’s not all available everywhere. I have been to plenty of places where Johnie Walker Black is the best option on the menu.

I live in New Jersey.

Oh well then you have access to whatever you want. Tell your male relatives to get adventurous. There is a lot of scotch out there to be tried!!!

My wife got me a layering tool for my birthday and it makes such pretty shots!

This is a variation on an astropop shot, taking out the blue caraçao and sour mix and going instead for:

1/4 oz grenadine
1/4 oz banana liqueur
1/4 oz Midori
1/4 oz rum
1/4 oz vodka

Ok that is fantastic! I have seen bartenders use a spoon to get the same result, but I’m sure the tool is way easier to use.

Please share which one you have so I can join the fun.
