Thank you, Anthony I haven’t unlocked the outside area yet, so I haven’t seen that it’s Berlin. But it’s clearly not the safehouse we see in the cutscenes from Hitman 2 and 3, because that’s a flat and no house. And I don’t know a reason why Grey should have two hideouts in Berlin. It’s not that much of a nice city
Yes, that could be What I meant is that there is no mention of the previous events of the trilogy. So I guess it’s up to interpretation, even where the safehouse comes from oh and almost all the targets from WoA are still alive, walking their routes over the maps, soooooo
For me, Freelancer feels like a “test” what could be possible to do in some future games and I think this is a neat way to find out. Who knows, maybe with a Hitman 3 year 3 we will get something more clearly storywise again, like New York, Haven or Ambrose Island
I hope not, since Absolution is effectively dead to me. I often forget that Absolution is actually a canonical Hitman game.
Same, same. The canonicity of Freelancer will likely bug me from now to the end of the universe if things remain unclear.
It admittedly makes playing a given thing more worthwhile knowing it’s canon, at least to me. Otherwise, it just feels like a fun, but largely meaningless, fan-fiction side-mission.
It should be noted that if Freelancer is not canon… THEN THE SAFEHOUSE IS NOT CANON.
The only thing that makes something canon is the intention of the creator(s).
So for instance I remember reading that IO considers Elusive Targets canon in that these characters and their backstories exist in the Hitman-world, but the actual events from the Elusive Targets (like so-and-so was assassinated during the Sanguine fashion show in Paris) are not canon (how could they be? 47 must’ve been mighty busy in Paris if that was the case).
If that’s the case then Freelancer can be non-canon while the safe house in itself is.
I think it’s pretty obvious in my opinion that Diana managed to get the safe house sorted for 47 sometime after Hitman 3. Probably within that 1 year time gap.
As for the WOA targets, well, it might be the case that all the WOA targets are removed from the final version of Freelancer? They might be only in the Closed Tech Test version perhaps?
Not true. Creators make mistakes with their own lore all the time, and even backtrack and declare things canon or non-canon at later points if it suits where they want to take things then. At a certain point with any fictional setting, even the creators’ intentions cease to be 100% the final say, and what is and isn’t considered canon must also be based on what is true to the characters/setting that has been established.
Wow, never knew that was how they looked at it. Guess that lends credit to the theory that The Undying could have actually taken place, but The Undying Returns did not, otherwise 47’s perfect record is ruined.
I suppose I worded this poorly. All I was really trying to say is that the creators (or really the owners) of the propery decides what is canon and what is not. No lines of reasoning made by fans can formally exclude things from canon.
Sure it can. It absolutely can. There must be contradictions present in the work to justify it, of course; fans can’t just arbitrarily exclude things from canon. But when those contradictions exist and a thing simply cannot be an actual occurrence in the canon story of a fictional setting, despite what the creators say, then yes, fan opinion can override creator claims. I point to DragonBall GT as a shining example of this; a series claimed as a canon sequel series, rejected by majority fanbase for not only being terrible but for having direct contradictions and impossibilities present that conflict with what had been previously established, forcing the creators to later excise it from canon due to the backlash, and create a new sequel series to replace it. The decisions of creators of a series are not the be-all and end-all.
I find this entire discussion pointless and confusing, so I’ll just stop now, but I feel like I need to point out that this still means the formal decision to make it non-canon was in the hands of the creators.
Absolutely love the Safe House. Can’t wait to see further unlocks when the full mode is released.
Only thing I’m “worried” about is that there won’t be enough customization for it to truly feel like my Safe House.
I hope they bring this concept with them into Hitman 4’s campaign.
Didn’t even realize that there are physical versions of the challenges in the vault. That’s sweet.
Added by Edit: Unless the game is confused it’s not actual physical challenges. The one bust looks like one of the challenge images, but I haven’t unlocked that challenge yet.
This is the way I prefer to look at it. Fans say this but IO never did.
On a broader point, I wish some people on this forum (not you specifically) would stop claiming their own silly, made up ideas about this universe as ultimate truth. IO haven’t really gone into the canon-debate at all themselves - other than “what is canon to you, is the canon”.
Well I’m just assuming the new targets in Freelancer for areas like Dartmoor and Paris etc will be canon?
I don’t think it will be any different to playing missions like Holiday Hoarders set in Paris when we have Harry Bagnato and Marv Gonif as the targets, but we have Viktor Novikov walking around from the WOA main campaign?
I get the Safehouse part because that ties in with Hitman 3’s ending, but I’m assuming all the new targets in Freelancer will be canon as well like how I’ve mentioned above.
Well, the thing with Holiday Hoarders is that you can get away with saying that it takes place at a different fashion show Novikov held the Christmas before the Showstopper mission, so he has a legit reason to be there. If the main targets appear in Freelancer missions, we can assume that we’re just supposed to ignore them completely.
Just rechecked Holiday Hoarders and there is also Dalia Margolis walking around as normal with the same routine as ‘The Showstopper’, so you’re right, I think we’re supposed to just forget about the Campaign targets walking around in Freelancer, unless of course they’re removed from the launch version?
