Malcolm in the Middle: Life’s Still Unfair

It was very funny, pretty much all the actors were able to seamlessly get back into their characters, I loved where they took Malcolm’s character having a daughter of his own, and yet it was so disappointing!

First of all, it was clearly written to be a movie but split up into four episodes for some reason. None of them flow like proper episodes of TV, and certainly don’t follow the same structure that the original show episodes had. It’s also trying to cram so many plotlines into it that there’s not enough time for a lot of them. Jamie and Dewey have basically nothing to do in the story, which is insane since they actually did the incredible job of casting Caleb Ellsworth-Clark as Dewey. There’s a ton of cameos from various supporting actors from the series, but almost none of them really impact the plot.

So much of Life’s Still Unfair just feels wrong compared to the original. The sets all look way too clean and sterile. The lighting is way too flat. The HD digital look is totally different from the original’s cozy film grain aesthetic. They couldn’t even be bothered to recreate the full intro from the original series, and instead of using the original version of “Boss of Me” they use a worse cover. Malcolm in the Middle used the single camera style excellently. Yet for Life’s Still Unfair, the cinematography was far more basic and bland.

And let’s not forget the biggest flaw that really took me out of the show: Bryan Cranston is a serious dramatic actor as we saw in Breaking Bad! Why would they make the weird decision to cast him in a comedy like Malcolm in the Middle!?

Overall it was fun seeing the family back together again but it could’ve been a lot more. I think it would’ve worked better if the show was focused more on Malcolm trying to raise his daughter Leah. They kinda try to do this in Life’s Still Unfair but with how there’s so much else going on it’s just crowded out. As far as Hulu reboots go, the King of the Hill reboot did a much better job at keeping the feel of the original show while also doing plenty new stuff with the characters.

Yes, referencing how some people complained back in the day that a comedy actor like Bryan Cranston who portrayed Hal as such a lovable goofball on Malcolm in the Middle wouldn’t be believable in a serious drama like Breaking Bad

Linwood always wanted to do a movie and it was pitched as that hence the format.

I just don’t know how I feel after watching it. It’s definitely a “member-berry” show and Malcolm as a character for this four part event series was just… annoying. Bryan Cranston was the highlight though clearly he gave it his all which to me was the best part about the whole thing.

and Stevie’s husband laughing over the cuts made during that video at the end was funny.

Quinn’s coming back babyyyy

Unless they bring back Astor, Cody, Lumen, or Jonah Mitchell, there’s no one left but Quinn and Masuka from the original series left alive who knows Dexter’s secret, and no one from New Blood except Angela, so unless she comes back too, there’s no one else who has any right to bring Dexter’s reign to a true end.

Don’t forget Charley, who is also returning for season 2. I wouldn’t mind seeing Lumen again, they even played her theme during Blessing’s scene when he talked about his mom being his north star.

I’m crying laughing watching the Roast of Kevin Hart. Funniest thing I have seen in years.

well I can say for certainty

there’s definitely short jokes in this

A few jokes that were way over the line too, but wow was it funny. Except Tom Brady’s set. He isn’t a pro comic so thankfully his was kinda short. It would have been better if there wasn’t so much “I’m Tom Brady and I’m the best ever” in it, but he can’t help himself it seems.

Need to catch up on some John Oliver episodes, missed this one, a really good (and fairly depressing one) about all the AI Chatbots being pushed these days and their potential dangers to human mental health.

I think this topic really got to John, on a personal level. Hearing his voice almost crack a few times in sadness/anger near the end was quite shocking for his usual composure.

Nirvanna the Band the Show, Season 2 Ep 7: The Banned

The plot: Matt and Jay get a hacker to help them hack into the Rivoli’s system.

I was fully expecting a reference to Mr. Robot as the title credits, but while I did Not get that, they did play the iconic theme of the show once they got to an actual “hacking” scene. I’m satisfied!:smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

(Oh dear god, strobe warning for this video, wtf Lakeshore…)

I’ve only got one episode left of the show, then I’ll be able to watch the movie again on Friday with all the backstory my obsession with this show has provided me! I’ll probably be less “wowed” by the movie’s insane antics since I originally went in blind, but I hope I’ll appreciate it more as an extension of the show’s material this time around.

I just started Sugar. It’s from a couple years ago. There are 2 seasons out. Collin Farrell plays a sorta tough guy character who specialises in finding missing people. He’s got all the special skills Jason Statham’s Transporter and Matt Damon’s Jason Bourn have, and he tends to work for unsavoury clients. Collin Farrell is as good as he always is and the support cast has been solid. I really like it so far, and I can already tell this will be what I watch while I wait for season 2 of Memory of a Killer and season 2 of Ahsoka.

Highly recommend!

The year of Nirvanna the Band continues.

Finally a LEGAL way to watch the series (without sneaking around) :stuck_out_tongue:

For whatever reason the US is getting special treatment.

  • July 24th, The Show and The Movie go to Hulu.
  • August 7th, they also come to Canada’s Hulu on Disney Plus.

God I hope this means there’s a plan to revive it for Season 3…

Hopefully Season 2 is in its proper order. There is a bit of continuity and the TV network that originally aired it screwed it the fuck up… :grimacing:

Apple’s finally given a proper look at their adaptation of Neuromancer and, holy crap, I’m cautiously optimistic.

Guess it’s time to read Neuromancer for the hundredth time…

Having cancelled AppleTV about 4 months ago, I’m slightly miffed now (but I doubt I resubscribe just for one show). Guess I’ll go play the game again (for a similar hundredth time… )

Oh yeah, forgot to send you this @Silvereyes, and everyone else: the Goldeneye episode of Nirvanna the Band has a unique intro using a rom-hack of the original game! Details by the DOP/Editor:

I feel awful today so I started watching American Horror Story. It’s pretty trashy and melodramatic, I’m kind of enjoying it as a junk food show right now. It is very funny how many times they’ve shown the lead actor’s butt in just the first episode alone, I don’t know why they keep doing that.

Did you start at season 1? Keep in mind that it’s an anthology series so season 2 will not continue season 1’s story (though the later seasons do refer back and connect in various ways). I personally enjoyed season 4 (Freak Show) the best and season 12 (Delicate) the least, but I’ve been watching it since the beginning.

Yes I’m watching season 1, Murder House.

Anyone watching Lucky on Apple TV?

The cast is stacked! Annette Benning, William Ficner, Timothy Olyphant, and Anya Taylor-Joy is the lead. It’s wonderful. She’s a grifter/con artist and so is her father (Olyphant), and the other two are serious bad dudes. I don’t know the two actors playing the main FBI characters but they are great too. It’s like 5 episodes in so far. Really enjoying it.
