Unpopular opinions about Hitman

I think you treat him a but unfair here. In Codename 47 he’s first seen in his underwear and beaten halfway dead but he managed to find the right safe and gives you the information.
Later in Romania he’s captured and drugged, but he’s mentally strong enough to remember you, the truth about your Past and he found the secret Lab Entry before 47 even knows what the fuck is going on.

He’s a Guy with bad luck, but he’s also tough as nails and manages to get shit done, like in Silent Assassin where he stole the keycard from a Guard to escape on his own (even if it doesn’t works out).

I like him.

He might be capable, that doesn’t really change he’s the closest 47 comes to his Princess in the castle.

About time to make him more than that, imo :stuck_out_tongue:

I wish woa actually respected smith more, he got one decent cameo in h2016. But in h2 and 3 hes just nothing more then an easter egg

Hold up a minute, he’s in there? or just alluded to?

He appears at a distance in Siberia in the Sniper Assassin mission. (You have to shoot open a locker on the left side of the map)

He appears as a secret easter egg graffiti in Berlin.

Let’s not forget about his appearance in The Pen and the Sword, aka the Hantu Port sniper mission.

Also this one’s a bit of an unknown Easter Egg but I’ll leave it here.

certain Hitman game modifications are uncomfortable to look at. specifically, the ones that alter the appearance of 47’s face and/or body. it’s not my intention to insult anyone who enjoys or creates these – they aren’t doing anything wrong! but to me it feels weird and saddening to look at sometimes. i get youtube recs that have these mods all the time now, and so i see them more often than i’d care to. i’ll admit this could just be me having too much empathy for 47, like i feel bad for him in way :no_mouth:

I bet a lot of you will disagree on this one:

The HUD elements of the WOA trilogy ruin the gameplay experience. If everything is turned on you have

  • Objectives
  • Minimap
  • SA tracker
  • Difficulty indicator
  • Timer
  • Weapon hud
  • Reloading indicator

Its very stressfull to look at. And most of it is so unnecessary. I disabled most of the HUD elements and I can’t see myself turning it on. I recommend everyone to try and play your favorite mission without all the HUD crap. You’ll be surprised how much better the game looks and how fun it is to challenge yourself without the handholding elements.

I can agree with some of that…

I like the keep the Objectives to fade away after start, then pop up whenever I get a kill (it’s satisfying that way). And sometimes, (if I forget to turn it back on from one of the Player Elusives), I keep the minimap off.

SA tracker is always on along with the weapon HUD, sometimes the timer, and never the difficulty HUD.

I am annoyed though that the Sniper Ammo HUD gets deactivated if the Reload option isn’t set to full (the thing that tells you how many rounds are in the chamber and how long a sniper reload takes). I always see people use that, but I never do, because the reload option is set to minimal.

Unpopular opinion: Tricks and exploits are cheap ways to play the game.

A lot of the videos you see of speed runners or other “elite” players rely on tricks like 2 or 3 bullet panic distractions, standing on muffins, using violins and breaching charges to get out of bounds, etc. I think these cheapen the game play. Yes, they are in the game so they’re fair game, so far as that goes, but I just feel like they aren’t really the way that IOI intended the game to be played.

Shooting the wall to get the NPCs/Guards in a panic state and running past them (in clear view but the AI can’t see you anymore) isn’t “stealth”, it’s relying on a gimmick to cheat the game.

Same with people who play H2SA & Contracts using the sliding glitch, fuck that lame shit, i prefer @EvilGeniusRo playstyle. Classy old school professionalism.

@EvilGeniusRo wheres my Part ll? :expressionless:

But yeah, never liked the sliding glitch or the mini-map glitch that skips the lock picking animation in SA

But it’s not an either-or situation, is it? A speedrunner exploiting game mechanics to achieve the fastest possible times does nothing to spoil the enjoyment of another person who wants to roleplay the game in a more ‘realistic’ fashion. So what’s the issue?

For who?

  • For the speedrunners themselves? No, because the only metric they care about is improving the time at which they can complete a level.
  • For the people who seek out and enjoy watching speedrun content? No, because it’s impressive for them to watch creative and skilled people push the game to its limits.
  • For the wider playerbase, most of whom have no idea speedrunning even exists? Of course not, they just enjoy playing the game in whichever way they desire.

I am quite capable of watching somebody finish a level in less than 30 seconds, and then go into that same level myself and spend 20 minutes roleplaying. It seems the experience could only ever be “cheapened” as a result of one’s own lack of imagination.

This, to me, is an incredibly strange thing to say. Why would it be desirable for everyone to play Hitman in ways the developers intended? A core principle of the series is freedom of approach within a sandbox environment. In fact, the developers themselves intend for players to experiment in this manner. They delight in seeing players try new things which never even crossed their minds during development.

Well, the thread is called “Unpopular Opinions”, after all isn’t it?

i don’t think it is that unpopular. i’ve seen that sentiment pop up time and again.

i mean, it’s completely wrong, but i’ve definitely seen it.

As you say, this is the unpopular opinions thread. Usually people will drop in, post their contrarian view (often with quite a lighthearted tone), maybe engage in a bit of banter and then move along. It’s usually not taken too seriously, so I must say I did think twice about responding in the first place.

If you had said “I think tricks and exploits are cheap ways to play the game” and left it at that, I wouldn’t have batted an eyelid. However, you went on to explain your view with a number of other statements to the point that you seemed quite sincere in your beliefs. That’s why I considered it worthy of a reply.

I would be genuinely curious to know if you have any follow up thoughts to the points I made. In particular, who is suffering from a “cheapened” experience as a result of the ways in which other people choose to play this single-player game? I really do not understand that proposition.

The forum guidelines still apply in full in this topic.

So if its an unpopular opinion that:

  • Warrants a whole thread to discuss the details, perspectives, etc
  • Requires attacking/insulting other people 'cause you don’t like how they play the game/what they do no their YouTube
  • Is just being stated to provoke/upset people

It’s not an unpopular opinion to be shared in this thread.

Sure. I think personally it cheapens the game for whoever is playing it. As an example, some video popped into my YouTube feed of someone doing something in one of the Hitman 3 levels. I don’t care to say who posted it as that isn’t the point. The subject though was that there was a way to get around a particular NPC reliably without being seen.

The method in question was basically to shoot the wall a few times, which caused this NPC to go where the bullet hit and investigate. Now the player in this video, after shooting the wall, walks basically right up to the NPC in clear view of him and of course the NPC never sees him because of the “bullet trick”.

The point of the video is clearly that by using this trick, you can avoid being seen by the NPC and thus maintain a Silent Assassin rating. My objection to the method is that the player didn’t avoid being seen, really. They used an AI glitch or exploit to do something they shouldn’t have been able to do.

I have gotten around that same NPC myself via at least two other methods. One involved simply killing the NPC and the other involved just not being seen but neither used a trick to do it. The fact that I found that particular method of avoiding this NPC “cheap” is what prompted me to expound in the first place.

Now having said all that, I don’t really care if YOU use a trick to complete the level in 2 seconds or get around some NPC or get whatever rating on every level doing it. I simply think that it makes the game “cheaper” to use those methods. I don’t use them but it doesn’t actually affect me if you do.

As for why I didn’t simply say “I think…” without any detail, I don’t prefer to post things like that unless I’m just replying to someone and it doesn’t require any additional detail.

I do know that the developers enjoy seeing things like this as it highlights to them areas where they could either improve their AI, repair glitches that they never intended, or they just like to see people “break” the game engine in entertaining ways.

You also pointed out that this is a single player game and therefore the way others play doesn’t make any difference. I agree with that wholeheartedly. I have been fairly vocal on this forum about stressing that I don’t bother with leader boards, or obsessing over getting a perfect 5-star rating, and I have never and will never post videos of my own game play. That said, there are people who do very much care how others play. There are threads on this forum about playing without using instinct, maps, or any other HUD elements. Those players probably don’t really care how anyone else plays the game either, but we encourage them to say what they think anyway.
