Not a Tekken guy, or a fighting game guy, but I do find the lore of Tekken to be fascinating. Tekken’s core plot is often centralised about members of the Mishima family fighting over the insanely powerful company, the Mishima Zaibatsu, and who gets to weild its massive influence, whilst fighting over their generation trauma.

Family members fighting over a giant company? Why, doesn’t that sound like the over the top anime version of Succession? Well, look who they’ve got to recap the events of Tekken so far in time for the new game:

Clemens did a long video talking about the core plot and lore of the first 7 games, it’s a long video but also a lot of fun and really does address how utterly batshit some of Tekken truly is:

I’ve only ever played Tekken 2, and enjoyed all the reveal trailers of the last game that brought in Negan from The Walking Dead (one of my favorite villains), but one thing I do like is how incredibly diverse the roster is in Tekken games. And not just in the characters themselves or where they come from, but their fighting styles, too. Going just off of Tekken 2, you’ve got an undercover cop who knows kung fu, a taekwondo teacher protecting his students, a cyborg who’s a master swordsman, a military android being tested for field combat readiness, a drunk wrestler, an assassin who uses all kinds of martial arts, a bear who does judo, a boxing kangaroo and velociraptor, and more. The sheer range being brought to the table for the story’s tournament was always impressive to me.

Wow. That was really well-edited, epic, and wonderfully voiced by Brian. I almost forgot to laugh. Almost…

Right, so a bit of an annual question - What games are you guys looking forward to most this year? (confirmed or hopefully coming out)

For me the one I“m still probably genuinely excited for is Espiocracy, which I was hoping to see last year already, but should see the light of day this year (unless there“s a delay). Apart from that, I“m actually pretty looking forward to the MGS3 and SH2 remakes, provided they turn out to be good games.

IĀ“m probably less excited for STALKER 2 than IĀ“d like to be, mainly because of all the delays and setbacks, and also because the demo I played at TGS felt ā€œjust fineā€ rather than something special. Or more specifically, it played just like the old games (which, actually, after all the issues the game and the studio have gone through over the years, might be more than enough for me).

Other than that, there are games I“d like to be excited for, but am being much more reserved for various reasons. Namely:

  • Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth - A new Yakuza game is always a good thing (even though this one seems to be too big for its own good), but I have at least 4-5 games from the series to play through before this one, so I most likely wonĀ“t get around to it before autumn (or Christmas). Also, SEGA has gone full Ubisoft with the game versions / pricing, which is never a good thing. If they want more of my money, they should just port the OG Yakuza 1 and 2 to PC. IĀ“d buy that in a heartbeat.
  • Commandos: Origins - A game IĀ“ve been hoping for for years, but wanted to see Mimimi do it. After the remasters of 2 and 3, I simply donĀ“t trust Kalypso enough to do the series justice. The early screenshots suggest there might not be any idiotic censorship this time around, but the whole thing still looks too ā€œplasticā€ for my taste. IĀ“ll give them the benefit of the doubt, but… (thereĀ“s also a couple of Commandos-like games coming out this year, so IĀ“m curious how those will turn out as well)

Finally, I am hoping to hear that I.G.I. Origins got picked up and will be finished by a new developer/publisher, rather than being outright cancelled, but I“m not keeping my hopes up.

Good picks @Rimland but aren’t you forgetting the game everyone has pre-ordered, Suicide Squad? I can’t wait to do lots of resource grinding and crafting in this wonderful live service project, that I’m sure Warner Brothers will support for years to come.

To start on the Nintendo front, it seems pretty quiet there in terms of first party releases. Mario vs Donkey Kong, Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door, and Luigi’s Mansion 2 HD are all remakes/remasters, and while I am interested in the latter 2, it’s not that exciting. I believe the only new thing Nintendo themselves are publishing is Princess Peach: Showtime! Peach getting her own game is pretty great and I hope it is both a good game and successful enough for Nintendo to not make it a one time thing.

Ofcourse, the reason why Nintendo doesn’t have much on the cards at the moment is due to the next console release, probably at the back half of this year. If I had to throw out a guess, I think we’ll get one more Direct soonish, just to tide people over until the next console is announced and Nintendo can start showing off their games for the new console.

Besides Nintendo, well, obviously the big one for me is Persona 3: Reload. I guess my only real niggle is that I worry it might play too safe in terms of story. Compared to, say, the Final Fantasy VII remake trilogy, which (at least from what I understand) seems like it is taking stuff from the original game and spin-offs and doing its own take/interpretation, it looks like P3R will stick very closely to the source material. I think that’s mostly a good thing, but as someone who thinks P3R’s story does have some problems, I would be a bit disappointed if they just did everything again without any alterations. But hey, perhaps a remake should just remake the gameplay and leave the story alone? Interesting question I guess. They have confirmed that there will be at least some new story content so I guess we’ll see how that goes.

If the rumour mill is true, Atlus basically has 2 Persona teams now, one doing the Persona 3 remake and the other doing Persona 6. If rumours are true, we could see P6 announced this year for release for 2025, which would be amazing if that happened. Not to mention the weirder rumour of a Persona party game, which would feature not only the P3, P4, and P5 casts, but the P1, and P2 casts as well. That would be hilarious and something to dethrone the dancing games in terms of weirdness if that really happened.

Test Drive Unlimited: Solar Crown: That looks like it is shaping up to be a wonderful driving experience. Hopefully it materialises this year though.

Helldivers II: You can blame @TheChicken for getting me interested in this one. I do enjoy a good co-op experience, especially one that has you focusing on objectives and is designed around good team work synergy. Know nothing about the first game, but the couple of trailers I’ve seen for this look fun. I’m eagerly awaiting Chicken’s review of the game when he gets it.

Shantae Advance: Risky Revolution: A remarkable one here. When the first Shantae came out for the Game Boy in 2003, it was pretty unsuccessful. When Way Forward started work on a sequel for the Game Boy Advance, that game had to be canned because they couldn’t find anyone to publish it. It was only in 2010 when they could make the next game and publish it on the Nintendo DS’s online shop and self publish it when the series would continue with Risky’s Revenge. But now that Shantae is now a popular enough franchise (one that the last game, Seven Sirens, got it’s own gorgeous Studio Trigger animation), it means Way Forward have got the old code from that Advance game, and are going to finish it, even making physical cartridges for the Game Boy Advance itself. So I think that’s pretty awesome.

As for stuff you mention Rimland, I have interest in the new Like a Dragon game after playing and finishing the first Yakuza remake. But considering I still have a bunch of other games to get through it, I may reach it in a few years. Silent Hill 2 remake would be something I’m interested in, I’d like to get into Silent Hill and know 2 is the beloved one, so hopefully this remake does it justice. Stalker 2, never played the other Stalker games, but considering all that has happened to the developer, I do hope this game can meet expectations. I’m definetly very interested in it myself.

Looking at my picks, apparently I’m fully back into JRPGs.

  • Final Fantasy VII Rebirth - Seriously, all the cool stuff happens in the middle third.
  • Suikoden I & II Remaster - Both PS1 classics; Suikoden II is regarded by many as one of the best JRPGs of all time, but I was never able to find a copy…at least one that wasn’t priced absurdly high.
  • Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes - A Kickstarter funded spiritual succesor from the creators of Suikoden.
  • SaGa: Emerald Beyond - A niche series in a niche genre. I’m surprised Square keeps making these games.

Because not everything is a JRPG

  • The Wolf Among Us 2
  • System Shock 1 remake - The PC version released over six months ago…still waiting for even a release date announcement for the console version. :weary:

And an honorable mention

  • Senua’s Saga: Hellblade 2 - I would be massively excited for this…if I had an Xbox.

Very soon, I’m excited for the Last of Us 2 Remaster to come out, so I can see what fun I can get out of the roguelite mode that’s packaged into it.

I’m pretty darn excited for Helldivers 2, very interested in how the switch to third-person instead of top-down could make things more chaotic and immersive seeing the enemies way more up-close.
Plus, whatever surprises they might have to iterate on in the sequel. So far, much of what was shown is very familiar to the original Helldivers, but there’s gotta be some new mechanics too…

I’m excited to see the reception to Pacific Drive as it really interests me due to its ā€œscavenge, build, survive in your makeshift carā€ while travelling deeper into a weird anomalous zone.

Other than that, nothing I’m particularly excited to release other than maybe the odd indie like The Plucky Squire.

Oh, also definitely Wolf Among Us 2, if it even exists anymore!! but we haven’t had any news about what’s been going on with it since its re-reveal early last year.
I’m also cautious given how The Expanse turned out (and the layoffs that happened a few months later) :grimacing:

Speaking of Helldivers 2, the game does come out in just under a month, but someone did an oopsie and posted the Launch Trailer way too early on Playstation’s channel.

I’m glad they’re retaining that hyper-patriotic satire and comedy.
ā€œFor Liber-AGH!!!ā€ was so great

I think the only games I’m actively looking forward to playing this year are Legend of Zelda and Metroid (because I intend to get one of the NES Minis sometime this year). I don’t think anything is coming out in 2024 that I know of that I was actually waiting for.

Must admit, I think it’s strong of you to be excited for the original Zelda and Metroid. Those are franchises I want to play more entries of, but considering how (arguably) archaic the NES titles are, I doubt I would ever bother with them personally.
