After a holiday gaming break, I got back to playing (and finishing) Alan Wake last week. My initial impressions pretty much lasted throughout the whole thing. The atmosphere and environments are absolutely awesome, the story is… well, weird… (it has a neat sense of mystery in the first four episodes but goes a bit bonkers afterwards, though I really liked the “revelation” part at the lodge), and the combat had moments where I enjoyed it and moments where I hated it (specifically those where it turned out that the better option is just running away, which is a pain to do with a character that looks like he´s gonna suffer a stroke after running 20 meters and has shadow zombies throwing sickles at him with top notch accuracy). Not sure how I feel about Wake as a protagonist. I found him rather annoying a lot of the time, though his “bugger off” attitude in the bonus episodes made him more likeable.
The two bonus episodes were ok and moved the so so ending a bit, although I wasn´t particularly fond of the dream-like nature of them. But the usage of words for environmental changes and kills was a neat gameplay twist, especially in the furnace and lighthouse sections. Also, that Sam Lake cameo in the final (regular) episode was awesome, and having James McCaffrey and “whoever voiced Vinnie Gognitti” in the game was also super pleasant.
Right now I´m mainly focusing on finally 100%ing MGSV. Only four side ops and one unchecked mission objective to go. Then I´ll probably give some of the side op mission mods a go before deleting my save data and starting a fresh game again.
Also, during the winter sale I nabbed Sekiro and Crusader Kings III. Started Sekiro a bit and am getting my arse royaly handed to me. Looking forward to trying to learn and beat it. I wanna give CKIII a go as soon as possible, but would like to squeeze in Desperados III before that if possible.
I’ve got 2 weeks off, so want to try and do some gaming. Decided to go back to Kingdom Hearts: Dream Drop Distance. Besides some quick detours of the KH3 demo and the Union Cross movie, all that is left after is KH3, which I want to finally get to. Especially since it seems like, if rumours and leaks are correct, it might not be long until KH4 gets announced. (Although I hope it doesn’t take as long from announcement to release like KH3 did.)
Want to go back to Shin Megami Tensei V and finish it. I’m pretty sure I must be at least two thirds of the way through the game. It’s a good game but it’s also so long. Level cap is 99, I’m level 55, guessing the game’s endgame must be in the 70s or 80s and I’ve already sunk like 40 hours in. I enjoy it but it does get repetitive. Kindof wondering if I would maybe enjoy SMTIV more, considering that game (and its direct sequel) were both 3DS exclusives, so I would guess they’d be a bit more bite sized.
Will probably play something on my PC. May have another shot at Turmoil, a game about being a 19th century oil tycoon. Got Maneater recenetly as part of Humble Choice, that seems like mindless fun.
I’ll get Blood: Flesh Supply at some point. I played and beat Duke Nukem 3D, so really want to get around to Blood and Shadow Warrior as well. Saying that though, I do find it a bit difficult getting readjusted to the way these Build Engine games play.
The story is by far great, the soundtracks are great, graphics can be considered great for the time but man it’s hard to get used to the controls after playing SA/Contracts/Abso&WoA for a while.
The story is so original when it comes to the fathers. It has a great flow as well, and ends in the best possible way. Would put it in the top 3.
Soundtracks don’t need any explanations, It’s Kyd baby!
Above all, Traditions of The Trade remains one of my least favorites. I got to kill @Franz once again, but yet It wasn’t as fun as Jegorov or as challenging as @MrOchoa.
Yeah I beat Ion Fury when it came out. Great game, amazing what they can do with the Build Engine nowadays. Looking forward to the expansion pack. You ever watch CV-11 on Youtube? He does some great videos about Build engine games. I know he sees Blood as the best Build Engine game.
@Freezer By the way, thought I’d let you know that I got Warioware as a Christmas gift from someone. Plan to try it out first with friends, think it might be fun going in blind with someone to see what the microgames throw at us. Sadly though, it looks my left Joy Con is starting to get Joy Con drift. Plan to send it to Nintendo repair soon, probably once my holiday is over. Thankfully I have a Pro Controller.
I’ve almost finished playing HROT, a czech-made FPS, with heavy 80’s Czechoslovakia aesthetic. It’s great, and I’m looking forward for full relase. I’ve recently re-discovered my enjoyment for FPS, and I’ve wanted to support independent game developer, so I’ve very happily grabbed it duirng Steam sale.
And I guess to keep this on theme, Civvie also did an episode covering that early access release. Looks good, I get real Dusk vibes from it and I loved Dusk. Think I’ll pick it up when it gets fully released.
Well, I finished Kingdom Hearts: Dream Drop Distance. And by “finished”, I mean I ended up bailing after hitting the final boss fights. I guess in my defence though, the game really does have a weird difficulty spike at the end, the kind where the enemies and bosses just become ridiculously quick and spammy. (Rewatching a couple of video reviews for the game, they bring this up too, so at least it isn’t entirely me sucking.) I just couldn’t be bothered because I knew I’d have to grind and also grind my Dream Eaters for some tier 3 abilities and I just didn’t have the patience. Wound up watching the last hour of cutscenes on Youtube.
Plot is… I mean… I’m not sure what to say. I mean really. Freaking time travel!? I knew that was coming but still, wow. I’m not sure what to say really. I want to like Kingdom Hearts but the plot keeps throwing in more and more convoluted nonsense into the mix and it just clogs everything up. I get the feeling this game especially seems to exist just so they can set up all the plot points for Kingdom Hearts 3, if I had to guess. I liked the cameos from the video game The World Ends With You, a game I really need to get around to playing since I hear nothing but great things about, especially since they ported it to the Switch and they recently made a sequel to it.
Watched the Back Cover movie. Interesting stuff, I guess. Nice to see some more backstory about The Keyblade War and some plot points that I’m sure will come up in KH3. Although a massive plot point is about there being a character being a traitor and the movie never actually resolves that.
And finally, the Birth by Sleep 0.2 KH3 demo thing. Pretty fun actually, a solid couple hours of game time. It definetly makes me want to play KH3 now. I actually think Aqua is way more interesting in this than she was in Birth By Sleep, it seems like her voice actor has gotten alot better.
So yeah, onto Kingdom Hearts 3 now. I’m sure there’s probably a couple of other loose ends of KH lore I haven’t tackled but I think I must be 90% there. I am genuinely looking forward to seeing how KH3 resolves thing actually.
From the reviews it seems this is an excellent port. Jetpack Interactive did an amazing job and I hope most of Sony’s game go through them when it comes to porting to the PC
I’ve only read the Czech review so far and that one was positive about everything except the quality of the port (large number of crashes, so right now it might depend on how lucky you get).
I’m really enjoying Kingdom Hearts 3. Have really dove head deep into it. I’m level 35 and in the eighth world. I think this is easily my favourite KH game honestly, even if KH2 I imagine is probably the consensus on the best game. So many combat options, the arenas are big, the game is just gorgeous, amazing what Unreal 4 can do. Granted, it is also pretty easy, I’ve only had 2 Game Overs, and 1 of them was just failing a mission objective, only one death thus far. Kindof interested to see how the overall plot finally ends. Was it worth watching all those cutscenes on Youtube and in-game and the nonsense of Dream Drop Distance?
Just got around to playing Mafia DE and it reminded me how great that series is, especially the storylines. As jank as the original was, they really don’t make 'em like they used to!
